Mental Wellbeing among Undergraduates in Eastern Nigeria: A Function of Academic Stress, Substance Abuse and Age (Published)
Predictors of students’ mental wellbeing were studied among 348 undergraduates selected through random cluster sampling from the Faculties of Social Sciences of three higher institutions in Eastern Nigeria. Participants’ ages ranged from 16 to 33 years, with the mean age of 23.15 and a standard deviation of 3.46. Variables considered include academic stress, substance abuse, age and institution type. Descriptive Cross-Sectional Design was employed while Standard Multiple Regression and 2-Way ANOVA were adopted for data collection and analyses respectively. Results revealed that academic stress, substance abuse and age had significant inverse relationship with mental wellbeing. Mental wellbeing and academic stress did not differ across gender, while type of institution influenced academic stress (P< .05). The researchers recommended stronger awareness of the implications of drug use and the re-structuring of academic programmes that can minimize stress. Also, the need for a free functional counseling unit to enable students obtain professional advice that will help promote mental well being was advocated.
This survey study investigated research anxiety among education undergraduates in University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The population was 1,467 final year education undergraduates while the sample was 500 students drawn through proportionate random sampling technique. One research question was posed and 3 null hypotheses were formulated. Data for analysis were collected through the administration of copies of “Research Anxiety Scale” developed by the researchers on the respondents. The reliability of this scale was established through the test re-test method with an interval of two weeks. The obtained reliability co-efficient for the 4 sub-sections of section B were 0.81; 0.78; 0.76 and 0.81. The research question was answered with mean and standard deviation while the null hypotheses were tested with t-test of one sample mean. The results show that research anxiety is pervasive among education undergraduates. It also shows that instructional, weak computation ability and research supervision factors contribute significantly to research anxiety among education undergraduates. These results were discussed, their counselling implications stated and recommendations were also made. One of the recommendations is that lecturers should be exposed to periodic seminars, workshops and conference to update their knowledge of research.
Psychosocial Factors Predicting Academic Adjustment of First Year University Undergraduates in Rivers State, Nigeria (Published)
This study was designed to determine the extent to which emotional intelligence, social support, self-esteem and coping strategies predict academic adjustment of first year university undergraduates in Rivers State, Nigeria. Correlation design was adopted for the study. Seven research questions and seven corresponding hypotheses guided the conduct of the study at 0.05 alpha levels. A sample of 382 first year university undergraduates of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, 2015/2016 academic session was chosen for the study through simple and proportional stratified random sampling techniques. Five instruments namely; Mangal Emotional Intelligence Inventory, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Coping Strategies Inventory and Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire – Academic subscale were used for data collection. Simple and multiple regression analyses were used for data analysis. All data were subjected to analysis using statistical package for social science (SPSS). Results showed among others that; emotional intelligence, social support, self-esteem and coping strategies taken together significantly predicted academic adjustment of first year university undergraduates. Based on the findings, it was recommended amongst others that; university authorities should introduce personality programmes that will provide training in emotional skills that will help university undergraduates in their overall adjustment to the new university environment.
The Effectiveness of English Language Courses as EFL in Undergraduate Level at Jahangirnagar University (Published)
This paper reports on an effectiveness of English Language Courses as EFL at the tertiary level, offered to first year undergraduate students of some departments of Jahangirnagar University. It aims to establish the case for using evaluation as a means for curriculum development. Currently, the EFL course is considered important for Bangladesh in general, and Jahangirnagar University students in particular, since our graduates face problems not only in coping with the demands of their respective academic disciplines. (e.g. the majority of academic texts are in English) , but also in finding suitable employment because of their lack of English skills. Since the newly introduced EFL course is still in its developmental phase it is necessary to find out the effectiveness to evaluate it and to see whether it fulfils student needs and course objectives. Datas for this study are collected from undergraduates who are currently studying EFL and some other who have recently completed their courses. This investigation reveals that students are not much benefited in learning English. There are number of limitations, which make these EFL courses ineffective. The investigation concludes with several implications and suggestions for those concerned for EFL learning.
This research work was carried out among undergraduates in a higher institution in Ogun State, Nigeria. It assessed the psychosocial determinants of undergraduates’ dietary habits in a private university in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study is descriptive in nature and involved 380 participants. Data were collected with the use of pre-tested questionnaire and analysed using simple percentage and chi-square statistical tools. The result revealed no statistically significant association between participants’ age and dietary practice (χ = 8.111; p=0.425). Also, it was revealed that a statistically significant association was found between participants’ gender (χ = 10.135, p =.038), participants’ self-esteem (χ = 29.237, p =.004) and dietary practice. It was concluded that failure to consume an adequate diet at adolescence time can result in delayed sexual maturation and can arrest or slow linear growth. Nutrition is also important during this time to help prevent adult diet-related chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. It was recommended that the University meal option should be done in a way that you can use a single meal ticket to either eat breakfast, lunch or supper and location for taking meal should be increased so as to strengthen breakfast and lunch programmes.
Dating and Academic Performance: An Empirical Analysis among Babcock University’s Undergraduate Students in Ogun State (Published)
This study examined the predictive power of dating on undergraduates’ academic performance at Babcock University, Ilishan-remo, Ogun State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was employed while two hundred and eighty-nine participants were selected through the multi-stage stratified random sampling technique. A self-developed questionnaire tagged Undergraduates’ Dating Scale (UDS) was used for data collection, while Students’ academic performance was measured the Students’ CGPA. The data collected was analyzed using statistical analysis of simple percentage, correlation coefficient, Z-test, t-test, and multiple regression analysis. The results revealed a significant difference do exist between male and female undergraduates’ dating behaviour (t-cal = 11.309 > t-crit. = 1.96, < 0.05); and a statistical difference do exist between the academic performance of those involved in dating and those who do not (z-cal = 3.543 > z-crit. = 1.96, < 0.05). The study further revealed a positive significant relationship between undergraduates’ dating behaviour and academic performance (r = .671; p>.05); while dating behaviour accounted for 27.1% of the variability in the undergraduates’ academic achievement (R = .538; R2 = .289; Adj. R2 = .271; F(1,287) = 21.501; p <.05). Based on the findings, it was therefore recommended that among other things, sexual and reproductive health education is necessary, which should be channeled from different angles of human interactional opportunities: home, school, play grounds, churches, etc.
Reflective Counselling Technique and Emotional Intelligence Training in Managing Expressed Performance-Anxiety of Trainee Counsellors in South-South Nigeria (Published)
This study investigated effects of emotional intelligence and self-efficacy training in enhancing counselling efficacy of undergraduate counselling practicum trainees in South-East Nigeria. The study adopted pre-test-post-test, control group quasi-experimental design with a 3x2x2 factorial matrix. Simple random sampling technique was used to select ninety (90) Guidance and Counselling practicum undergraduates from three tertiary institutions in South-East Nigeria. The participants were randomly assigned to groups. Participants in the two treatment groups were exposed to eight weeks of emotional intelligence and self-efficacy training. One instrument was used: The Counsellor Activity Self-Efficacy Scale (CASES) (α= 0.97). Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using Analysis of Covariance. There was a significant main effect of treatment on counselling efficacy scores of undergraduate counselling practicum trainees F(2,58)=55.140, P<0.05. Also, there was significant main effect of age on counselling efficacy scores of undergraduate counselling practicum trainees exposed to treatments (F (1,77) = 3.651, P < .05). However, there was no significant main effect of gender on counselling efficacy scores of undergraduate counselling practicum trainees exposed to treatment (F(1,77) = 0.741, P > .05). Emotional intelligence and self-efficacy training were effective in enhancing counselling efficacy of undergraduate counselling practicum trainees. Undergraduate counselling practicum trainees should be exposed to psychological intervention programmes such as emotional intelligence and self-efficacy training that would help enhance their counselling efficacy competence and capability to effectively dispense their professional service to humanity.
An Assessment of Undergraduates’ Nutrition Awareness Level on the Scourge of Cancer as a Current Devastating Phenomenon in Nigeria (Published)
The prevalence of cancer continues to increase in Nigeria. The factors that appear to be most responsible are poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyle. Therefore, this study examined the undergraduates’ nutrition awareness level on the scourge of cancer as a current devastating phenomenon in Nigeria. A descriptive research design was adopted for the study. A total of 600 undergraduates were selected through stratified and random sampling techniques from 3 universities in Ogun State, Nigeria. A self-developed questionnaire and pilot-tested was used to collect relevant data from the respondents. The data gathered from the study were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that Nigerian undergraduates are not well informed on the importance of nutrition in the prevention of cancer. Also, socio-personal characteristics such as gender, discipline, and school type significantly did not influence on how informed the undergraduate students are on disease prevention and making adequate food choices. In view of the outcome of the findings in this study, it is recommended that public health education be intensified to promote people’s awareness of the consequences of poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyle; and making healthy food choices.
Effects of Collaborative Learning and Emotional Intelligence Techniques in Enhancing Managerial Accounting Competence among Accounting Undergraduates in South-East Nigeria (Published)
This study investigated effects of collaborative learning and emotional intelligence techniques in enhancing managerial accounting competence among accounting undergraduates in south-east Nigeria. The study adopted pre-test-post-test, control group quasi-experimental design with a 3×2 factorial matrix design. Purposive sampling technique was used to select one hundred and twenty (120) Accounting undergraduates from three tertiary institutions in South-East Nigeria. The participants were randomly assigned to groups. Participants in the two treatment groups were exposed to eight weeks of collaborative learning techniques and emotional intelligence training. Self-constructed instrument was used and three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using Analysis of Covariance and t-test. There was significant treatment effects in enhancing managerial accounting competence among undergraduates in the experimental and control groups (F(3,116) = 3.055, P < .05). The Pair Wise Comparison of the Adjusted Y=Means on the Treatment Effects revealed that the control group had the lowest adjusted post-test mean score g ( =69.03), followed by emotional intelligence group ( =91.79) and collaborative learning technique ( =93.05). The result of the study also showed that there was no significant difference in the treatment effect experienced among participants between male and female undergraduates exposed to treatment in collaborative learning technique group. Furthermore, the study revealed that there was no significant difference in the treatment effect experienced among participants between male and female undergraduates exposed to treatment in emotional intelligence training group. School authorities school give students good orientation on the need to seek professional counselling support service to enable them adjust to the reality of their academic demands and real life situation(s).

The results suggest that the primary concerns for addressing the challenges are aligning the views of the students and teachers on the potential problems of essay writing and integrating academic-writing skills and practices into the curriculum through informal activities. To improve the teaching and practice of academic writing at Najran University, short essay assignments and literature reviews could be incorporated into existing courses, and a new intensive course on academic reading and writing could be established. Any strategy should, however, consider the value and impact of the proposed measures and the whole scope of problems faced by the students.
