Investigating Feminist Tendency in Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” In Terms of Sara Mills’ Model. A Feminist Stylistic Study (Published)

This paper purports to explore the relationship between linguistic structures and socially construed meanings in a narrative text. A stylistic analysis is conducted to unravel the design agilities of Margaret Atwood’s novel “The Handmaid’s Tale”. It tries to investigate her stylistic traits whereby much of the time her words seem to cloak or obscure what really happened. By adopting Sara Mill’s Model, the researcher attempts to reveal the ideology and power relations that underpin a literary text from different levels (according to the model) word, phrase, and discourse. The evidence seems to be strong that the model, however, has identifiable functions which contribute to the effective meaning of the novel. On this basis, it may be inferred that these elements trigger and play significant roles in passing the intention of the writer across.

Stylistics as an Approach to Discourse Analysis: A Thematic Textual Analysis (Published)

This write-up is a stylistic analysis of a prose passage along three thematic areas: pace, expectancy and high emotional tension. Each of these themes is carefully traced in the passage using the analysis. It is a practical application of one of the numerous approaches to Discourse Analysis-Stylistics-in the analysis of a text. The text is an excerpt from Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart.

Linguistic Analysis of Literary Texts-A Necessity or a Mere Aberration (Published)

“Her approach (to text analysis) marks her out as someone who believed firmly that there needed to be a recognition within intrinsic criticism that linguistic analysis of literary text was a necessity and not simply an aberration“ (Nowottny,1962).In the light of this excerpt, we have chosen and analysed three literary texts. The study includes both linguistic and literary analysis, with greater emphasis on the linguistic aspect of the analysis so as to give credence to this view by Nowottny. Indeed, good stylistic analysis of literary texts should include linguistic analysis if the analysis is to be standard and is targeted to unveil the ‘full style’ of an author .Three literary texts are used in this study: The Hollow Men (T.S. Elliot).The Beatitudes (Jesus Christ) and (listen) (E.E. Cummings).

Foregrounding the Theme of Shallowness in the Hollow Men: A Stylistic Analysis (Published)

This paper aims to analyze The Hollow Men through Stylistic Analysis at the levels of graphology, phonology, morphology and the lexico-syntactic to foreground the hollowness and emptiness of the universe after the traumatic situation of world wars. All language choices used by the poet lead towards the shallowness, despair, vagueness, nothingness and inability of love for the universe/ people. The people are detached from nature, one another, and live in a place which is dead, cactus, and barren of any spiritual presence just like the people of that land as what Singh (2013) and Urquhart (2010) pointed out in their studies.

Style in Religious Discourse: An Analysis of the Beatitudes (Published)

This study uses the linguistic stylistic theory to examine the use of language in the Beatitudes. This is carried out in order to demonstrate to readers that a speaker can deploy language to achieve stylistic effects. The study uses stylistic and content analysis to analyse the linguistic choices used by the speaker in the Beatitudes. The study reveals that each of the Beatitudes is a brief meaningful proverb-like proclamation of blessings. Each line of the Beatitudes has three parts: an ascription of blessedness, a description of the person’s character and a statement of the reason for the blessedness. The first eight sentences comprise two main clauses joined by a coordinator ‘for’, making them compound sentences. Line nine of the Beatitudes deviates from the rest of the lines. It has a single ascription with three conditions which are requirements for the blessedness. The verb to be form ‘are’, is the main form used in the first clauses of the Beatitudes and ‘Blessed’ is the ‘Subject’ throughout the text. The analysis identified three types of parallelism used in the beatitudes namely whole text parallelism, inter-sentential parallelism and intra-sentential parallelism. The use of these types of parallelism improves writing style, readability and comprehension of the text. It was also found that parallelism carried the idea of semantic equality of sentences and clauses within the Beatitudes, performed an emotive function on the reader, and created a satisfying rhythm in the language used by the speaker. The  paper  found  out  that  each  of  the linguistic choices  has identifiable function  that  is performed  in the  Beatitudes. It is concluded that these linguistic elements contribute meaningfully to the thrust of the overall message of the Beatitudes which assures people of high religious virtues to serve faithfully in order to receive blessing in the near future, and that the manipulation of words by a writer creates a distinct style through which he/she reaches out to the audience.
