Predictors of Students’ Attitude towards Mathematics In Obio-Akpor Local Government Area Of Rivers State, Nigeria (Published)

The study investigated predictors of students’ attitude towards mathematics in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State Nigeria. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a correlational design. A sample of 350 senior secondary students was drawn from the population through stratified proportionate random sampling technique. The four instruments used for data collection were Mathematics Self-concept Questionnaire (MSCQ), Mathematics Self-Efficacy Scale (MSES), Teachers Competency Questionnaire (TCQ) and Attitude Towards Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) which were validated by experts in measurement and evaluation. The reliability coefficients of MSCQ, MSES, TCQ and ATMI were 0.75, 0.87, 0.80 and 0.85 respectively which were determined through Cronbach alpha technique for internal consistency of the instruments. Linear regression analysis was used to answer the research question while the t-test associated with the regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The results revealed that mathematics self-concept, mathematics self-efficacy and teachers’ competency significantly predicted students’ attitude towards mathematics. These results and their implications were discussed. Among other things, it was recommended that teachers and counsellors should enlighten the students more on mathematics self-concept and self-efficacy which will guide them in having positive attitude towards mathematics. Also mathematics teachers should continue to practice the use of different approaches and techniques in the teaching of mathematics concepts and principles

Analysis of Students’ Attitudes toward Self-Employment Intention in Tertiary Institution in Nigeria (Published)

The paper analyzes students’ attitudes toward self-employment intention. Students have different traits which perhaps are responsible for shaping their attitudes. The decision to become self-employed is dependent on so many factors. People become self-employed either because they want to explore an existing opportunity or because there is limited paid employment opportunities. High unemployment rate among graduate is one of the major problems facing government of Nigeria at present. The recent effort by the governments at different levels to encourage youth to become self-employed is an indication of the resolve to redirect students’ attitudes toward self-self-employment in the country. At this stage, it is important to ascertain what influence the attitude of students and how they vary in their intention toward self-employment. Survey design was conducted to collect data from final year student of Higher National Diploma (HND) across four schools of Kano State Polytechnic. Correlation analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to examine the relationship among the selected variables and to know the difference among the students on their self-employment intentions. It was found that the relationship between self-employment intentions with the students’ self-efficacy, innovativeness and risk taking propensity are positive, whereas self-employment intention negatively relates with the students’ locus of control. The study also reveals that there is no significant difference among students on their self-employment intentions.

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors effected calculus learning outcome of the student. This study was conducted with 176 respondents, which were selected rodomly. The data were obtained by questionnaire, and then analyzed by using multiple regressions, and correlation, at level of α = 0.05. The findings showed there is the significantly correlation between the basic mathematics competence of the learners, learners’ attitude towards calculus, students’ assessment on lecturers’ teaching competence with learners’ achievement on calculus separately and simultaneously.
