Influence of Social Media on Communication Skills and Academic Performance of Business Education Students in Colleges of Education in Southwest, Nigeria (Published)
The study assessed the influence of social media on communication skill acquisition and academic performance of business education students. The study had two specific purposes, three research questions and two hypotheses. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of 461 respondents. A structured questionnaire tagged Influence of Social Media on Communication Skills and Academic Performance Questionnaire (ISMCSAPQ) was used to collect data from the respondents. The instrument was subjected to face and content validation by three experts with a Cronbach reliability coefficient of 0.87. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data to answer the research questions while linear regression statistic was used to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed among others that social media use significantly positively influence communication skills and academic performance of business education students in colleges of education. It was concluded that social media when used effectively for academic purposes is capable of improving communication skills and academic performance of Business Education students in colleges of education. The study is potentially of great significance to teachers and students, enabling them to recognize, accept and deploy social media as implements of teaching, learning and skill acquisition. It was recommended among others that students should be encouraged to use social media to acquire necessary information while government provide conducive learning environment such as e-library for academic excellence.
Ethnomusicological Enquiry into Contemporary Indigenously Inclined Ìjálá Music in Yoruba Land (Published)
Yoruba social music appeal to traditional audience who are accustomed to the conventional property embedded in it. The appeal facilitates an increasing number of traditionally inclined social music practitioners who are gradually directing their efforts towards the creation of new form of ensemble music. Ethnographic method of data collection used in the study revealed that Ìjálá genre is text-based with symbolic use of words and allusion varying from place to place. It is monophonic in concept and the subject is centered on praise and adoration. It is seen as a verbal tool in the context of Ìjálá performances. The finding reveals the functional process of oral genre from place to place within a family or otherwise. Information on the use of Ìjálá music for different occasions was significant to the study. It further reveals the healing process of the oral genre.
Social Support, Coping Strategies and Academic Adjustment of First Year University Undergraduates in Rivers State, Nigeria. (Published)
This study was designed to determine the extent to which social support, and coping strategies predict academic adjustment of first year university undergraduates in Rivers State, Nigeria. Correlation design was adopted for the study. Three research questions and three corresponding hypotheses guided the conduct of the study at 0.05 alpha levels. A sample of 382 first year university undergraduates of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, 2015/2016 academic session was drawn from the population through purposive and proportional stratified random sampling techniques. Three instruments namely; Multidimensional Scale for Perceived Social Support, Coping Strategies Inventory and Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire – Academic subscale were used for data collection. Simple and multiple regression analyses were used for data analysis. All data were subjected to analysis using statistical package for social science (SPSS). Results showed that; social support statistically significantly predicted academic adjustment of first year university undergraduates; coping strategies (problem-focused and emotion-focused) taken together statistically significantly predicted academic adjustment of first year university undergraduates; on the basis of individual contribution, problem-focused was a significant contributor to academic adjustment of first year university undergraduates while emotion-focused was not. Based on the findings, conclusion and recommendations were made.
The gambling behaviour of the youth is among the least explored research areas in Ghana. Most previous study focused on youth and employment, youth and development, youth and politics, youth empowerment, youth and education, youth and HIV/AIDS and more recently youth and agriculture. The big question is how much do we know about youth and problem gambling as Ghanaians? This study deployed social learning theory and social conflict theory by Albert Bandura and Karl Max respectively as the underpinning philosophies to assess youth gambling attitude in Ghana in order to fill this knowledge gap. A cross sectional descriptive survey approach was adopted for this study. Stratified sampling technique was used to select 200 youth from all the nine sub metro within Kumasi metropolis. Structured questionnaire was the main instrument used in gathering primary data. Data were analyzed with Predictive Analytic Software (PASW) for windows. The results were presented using regression, correlation, ANOVA and percentages. The study revealed that all the factors outlined to predict youth gambling behaviour were significant (R2 = 0.822, ANOVA < 0.05). Furtherance, 1% change in familial factors will bring 70.7% (0.8412) in youth attitude towards gambling. Moreover, 1% change in social factors will bring 22.9% (0.4792) change in youth attitude towards gambling. Also, a unit change in cultural and demographic factors will bring 4.7% (0.2192) change in youth attitude towards gambling. Finally, a unite change in environmental factor will bring 2% (0.1422) change in youth attitude towards gambling. It is recommended that future studies should consider factors such as cognitive and economic factors to determine youth gambling behaviour.
Issues of Cultural, Political and Racial Identity of Women in Rich’s Poetry: A Socio-Feministic Analysis (Published)
This paper aims to analyze the socio-feministic picture of a poet who has distinguished place in American literature for her contribution in the field of feminism. The feminist struggle against patriarchal set up has been found in Rich’s poetry with reference to the selected poems. In these poems women are not constantly under men’s power and supremacy; they want to struggle for their rights and make an improved life even when there is no man. Women revolt and escape as they are being oppressed and burdened by male oriented society. She is different from other American poets like Plath whose poetry revolves round her. This paper will helpful in understanding the background of her poems.
The aim of the current study was to investigative the relationship that exists among emotional, social, cognitive intelligence and social support network among youths. Correlational research design was adopted for this study. Three hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The population consisted of all youths in Rivers State. A sample of 856 respondents was drawn from the population using cluster sampling technique. Four instruments were used for data collection. They included Emotional Intelligence Behavior Inventory (EQBI) by Akinboye, Multidimensional Scale for Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) by Gregory, et al., Tomso Social Intelligence Scale (TSQS), and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient was used to test the hypotheses at .05 level of significance. Results indicated that emotional, social and cognitive intelligence demonstrated significant positive relationship with social support network among youths. Based on the findings, conclusion and recommendations were made.
THE GENDER APPROACH TO SOCIAL AND CULTURAL FACTORS OF AGEING AND OLD AGE EXPERIENCE IN KENYA (Published)
The central aim of this paper is to discuss the gender aspects of ageing as a process, and old age experience based on a study of Bungoma District, Kenya. The basic argument is that although ageing is a biological process, its experience is largely dependent on the social and cultural dimensions of the society. The study employed the interview schedule as the key instrument of data collection, supplemented by key informant interviews, observation methods, reviews of secondary data and case study method. The sampling procedures used were both probability and non-probability. The deductive approach to interpretation of data was also used. It emerged that whereas there is a difference in longevity between men and women owing to the variation in life expectancy, other social factors are equally important. These include class ethnicity, caste, eating and working habits and family circumstances. Depending on the stability of the above factors certain similarities and differences in old age experience are evident across the gender line. The study also highlighted how cultural practices influence the gender experience in old age, especially the social practice of avoidance between the parents and their sons-in-law and the daughters-in-law. The issue of widowhood in vividly examined.
THE INFLUENCE OF BUSAYRI AND HIS BURDAH ON THE ‘ULAMA’ AND SOCIAL ETHICS IN YORUBALAND (Review Completed - Accepted)
Sharaf din Busayri whose panegyric poem is the subject of this paper held in high esteem for his hall mark spiritual desire. The paper is not intended to present all his lines, rather the aim is to call attention to some areas in his poem. The paper begins with an introduction. Sketchy biographical information about the family background and youth of al-Busayri is provided. His literary activities as well as the reason surrounding the production of al-Burdah are carefully discussed. Selected areas of influence are adequately examined. We have discovered that in spite of medical breakthrough in diagnosing some diseases, many other ailments are curable through spiritual exercises as the case of our author, Busayri. We noted that Muslims in Yoruba land name their children and living areas after the poet in an attempt to perpetuate his work, and to immortalize his memory. Verses from the work are still recited as charms in Yoruba land in particular and Nigeria in general as well as in some other parts of the Muslim world.
A Study on factors influencing consumer buying behavior in cosmetic Products (Review Completed - Accepted)
The purpose of this study is to investigate internal and external influences on consumers purchasing decisions on cosmetic products in Tamilnadu and Kerala. The questionnaires were given to 500 consumers who are all using cosmetics. Out of 500 consumers contacted, 412 questionnaires were received with required coverage and details. The instruments of this study involved two parts: the first section of the instrument consisted of forced-choice questions about demographic characteristics: gender, marital status, age, occupation, monthly income level. The second section variables chosen for this study in order to measure the influence of consumer buying behaviour in cosmetics products. The Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) for Microsoft Windows 20.00 was used to complete the analysis of the collected data. Descriptive statistics, including means, standard deviations were implemented in order to investigate the demographic data, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to determine whether any significant relationships exist among respondents. In addition, the .05 level of statistical significance was set at all statistical tests in the present study. The findings of the study were generalized as follows: Statistically significant differences were found in Income level by the different brand dimensions like social, culture and there is no statistically significant difference in dimension of Personal and psychological. In the end of the study implications and conclusion were provided.
The Effectiveness Of Life Skills Programmes In Three Teachers Colleges Within Masvingo Province Zimbabwe (Review Completed - Accepted)
This study sought to determine the effectiveness of Life Skills programmes in three teachers’ colleges in Masvingo province namely: Masvingo, Bondolfi and Morgenster. In this study eight-five (85) student teachers, four (4) lecturers and three (3) nurses from the three colleges participated in the research project. Student teachers filled in questionnaires, lecturers and nurses were interviewed. The study showed that life skills programmes are quite effective in equipping student teachers with stress management skills, cognitive skills, social skills and emotional skills. The study also revealed that student teachers are equipped with information on HIV, AIDS, STIs and other health related information which play a major role in behaviour change.Though Life Skills programmes can be quite effective, the research study revealed that proper methodologies, technical support and lecturer motivation are of paramount importance in the implementation of these programmes. The study recommends that there is need for staff development programmes for lecturers so that they are equipped with relevant methodologies for life skills programmes. It is also necessary that these programmes be well funded so that they do not suddenly grind to a halt. Finally, it is also recommended that further research be undertaken in order to establish how best these life skills programmes can be implemented considering the large enrolments of teachers’ colleges
The diversification of social and origin culture Bawean was currently as the assimilation result of community social and culture diversification in Bawean Island in a very long process from 18th century until the beginning of 19th century, it was also belonged from ethnic culture of outside Bawean Island which is carried by Bawean inhabitants wandered about, it is started from the beginning of 19th century until now.These social and culture were absolutely having characteristic. One of dominant characteristic was a local wisdom and locally developed knowledge which located in the middle of Bawean’s community and it was developed from one generation to other generation. This community social and culture characteristic in Bawean Island would be a world’s attractiveness as well as capable to sustain tourism activities at Bawean Island.
