Effect of Parental Unemployment on Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Nigeria (Published)
This paper examines the effect of parental unemployment on academic performance of secondary school students. Thus, the efficacy of parental unemployment is perilous social problem which contributed to the inability of many parents to caring for their children education. However, the challenges of unemployed parents contributed to the high rate of step—down many students in secondary education. Consequently, there some factors which contributes to unemployed parents in country such as shortage of industries, inexperience of people, unskilled labour and unavailable of firms. Moreover, thousands of embody men and women are unemployed in Nigeria. However they are seeking for employment opportunities, but the job is not available for them that was the reason many parents are jobless and they cannot provide their childern education pre-requisite, while some parents are not ready to work that is reason they are jobless and find it cumbersome to care for their children education. Presently, thousands of secondary school students involved various bad activities such prostitution, Yahoo, kidnapping, stealing, and other relevant offences in our country, because of inability of their parents to send them to secondary education . Yet, unemployment cause high rate of poverty which affected many patents in thirty- six states of federation includes Abuja the federal capital of Nigeria. However, the rate of drop out increasing daily basis because their parents could not perform their responsibility as parenting who have devoted to caring for their children education. Moreover, the population of unemployed parents is too high in Nigeria .
Effects of Socratic Questioning Teaching Strategy on the Achievement of Public Secondary Schools Biology Students in Langtan North, Plateau State, Nigeria (Published)
The effect of Socratic questioning teaching strategy on the achievements of students on the concept of habitat was investigated. The design of the study was a quasi-experimental, specifically the pre-test post-test control group design. There are 14 public secondary schools in Langtang north with a population of 2740 students. Two schools were randomly sampled. One was randomly assigned to the experimental group and the other to the control group. They were used as intact groups. The sample was made up of 96 students, (50 males and 46 females). Four research questions were answered while six hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The instrument used for data collection was a 30-item test. The instrument was validated and its reliability established at 0.84. The data collected was analyzed using mean, standard deviation and the t-test. Findings indicated that the Socratic teaching had significant effect on the students’ performance. The use of the Socratic teaching strategy was recommended.
An Evaluation of Classroom Experiences of Basic Science Teachers in Secondary Schools in Ebonyi State of Nigeria (Published)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the Classroom Experiences of Basic Science Teachers in Context of Competencies and Opinions. Two instruments were developed and used for the study, the instructional skills performance level (ISPL) based on five-point performance scale and questionnaire. The two instruments were developed by the researcher and validated by 3 specialists in Science Education, one from measurement and evaluation and two from biology and Chemistry. The questionnaire was administered on 200 Basic Science Teachers randomly selected from Ebonyi State Junior Secondary schools. The questionnaire was divided into 2 sections. Section I contains all the variables. Section II contains a 10-point item scale constructed by the researcher seeking the opinions of basic Science Teachers. It also contains a list of 76 instructional materials used in teaching Basic Science. The Results showed that Basic Science teachers seem to have a title performance level in classroom management and students participations and in evaluation/summary. They performed averagely in the remaining 3 instructional skills; it was also found that most teachers who teach Basic Science used lecture and demonstration method in teaching. Based on the findings, recommendations were made.
