Geochemical Mapping of Metal Contamination and Distribution in Topsoil, Western Oban Massif Southeastern Nigeria (Published)

This study is to examine heavy metal contamination of topsoil around the western flank of the Oban Massif and environs, southeastern Nigeria. Soil samples were collected in seven locations in farming and quarrying land use locations across the study area. Heavy metals (Al, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, V, Pb, As, Cr, Co, Ni, and Mo) were analyzed in soil samples using ICP-Ms. Computation of enrichment factor (EF) and Pollution index (PI) was performed on concentration values of potentially toxic heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, As, Cr, Ni and Co), to determine the extent of pollution caused by human activities in topsoil of farming and quarrying areas. The concentration values of heavy metals in soils were also compared with world average background values of heavy metals. Results showed that the potentially toxic heavy metals enrichment factors and pollution index values were below values considered to be harmful to human health. The soil samples with respect to PI can be classified as deficient to minimal enrichment factor. With exception of Pb, Cr and Co which had PI values slightly above 1 and mean values exceeded 1, other potentially toxic heavy metals do not pose any health threat. The heavy metals: Pb Cr and Co are a health threat. Excess Pb and Co are carcinogenic to human system, while excess chromium causes diabetes and bronchitis. Sources of Pb, Cr and Co should be further investigated to institute appropriate remediation measures and also the bioavailability of these heavy metals be conducted in the human population inhabiting the study area.

This paper takes off on the pedestal of the paradoxical stance with regards to religion and the place of religion in modern society. While some scholars from Charles Taylor in his secular age to Pope Benedict suggested the growing secularization of the pillars of society, others from professor Derrida to Meyer argue for the resurgence of religion. This paper while taking a middle stand argues rather for a change in the modality of remediation of religion in modern society. So that the onus of argumentation is not about the decrease or increase of the belief culture but the changing ground of its experience and remediation by the new and prevailing media. The paper postulates that in the ambience of an ever increasing visual culture, religious representation buys into the language of visuality. So that there is a greater tendency to emphasize that which is often more visible than that which is not and even non visual aspects of religion are reduced to visibility.

Gender, Feedback with Remediation and Students’ Attitude towards Mathematics (Review Completed - Accepted)

The study investigated the effects of feedback and remediation as instructional strategies and gender on junior secondary school students’ attitude towards mathematics. The sample for the study consisted of 237 junior secondary two (JSS II) students in intact classes of three co–educational schools purposively selected from Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State. The study employed quasi–experimental design with treatment at three levels namely: Formative Test with Feedback and Remediation, Formative Test with Feedback only and Formative Test without feedback and remediation which served as control. The treatment levels were crossed with students’ gender (male and female). Four research instruments including three Mathematics Formative Tests I. II, III and Mathematics Attitude Scale (MAS) were constructed, validated, and used for the collection of all relevant data. The data collected were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and Scheffe’s Post–Hoc Analysis. Result from the study shows a significant effect of treatment on students’ attitude towards mathematics. However, there was no significant effect of gender on students’ attitude towards mathematics
