Path Analysis of Innovative Management Practices and Secondary School System Effectiveness in Cross River State, Nigeria (Published)
This study used a path analytic approach to examine the composite interaction of supervisory and records management with secondary school system effectiveness in terms of students’ academic performance, teachers’ job effectiveness and principals’ administrative effectiveness. Two research questions were answered while one null hypothesis was tested. The study adopted a factorial research design. Convenience sampling technique was adopted by the researchers in selecting a sample of 1,200 respondents which comprised 271 principals and 929 teachers from a population of 271 principals, and 4,878 teachers. Principal Innovative Management Practices and Administrative Effectiveness Questionnaire (PIMPAEQ), Teachers work effectiveness questionnaire (TWEQ), and Students Mathematics Achievement Test (SMAT) were all used as instruments for data collection. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the research questions and null hypothesis were answered and tested (at .05 level of significance) respectively using multiple regression and path analyses with the aid of SPSS v25 and Amos v22. Findings from the study established amongst others that; supervisory management and records management practices have a significant joint contribution to students’ academic performance by 66.4%, teachers’ job effectiveness by 71%, and principals’ administrative effectiveness by 86.8%. Supervisory management and records management practices had a significant influence on students’ academic performance (F= 1183.641, p<.05), teachers’ job effectiveness (F= 1465.615, p<.05), and principals’ administrative effectiveness (F=3924.763, p<.05). It was recommended amongst others that; secondary school principals should jointly use supervisory and records management practices as innovative techniques for improving students’ academic performance, teachers’ job effectiveness and their own administrative effectiveness.
Records Management in Institutions of Higher Learning: Towards the Business Support Function (Published)
Records are assets as they represent accumulated intellectual capital of organizations. For an institution to have sound decision making, efficient and effective records play a vital role. This paper probes into the business functions of institutions of higher learning as supported by proper records management. A case study research design was used to establish the records management policy of Moi University, Kenya. The study population consisted of 111 respondents drawn from the main campus. The sample size Purposively selected based on the respondents’ role comprised 78 respondents including 6 Top Management representatives, 22 Action Officers, 6 Records Supervisors, 4 auditors, 30 Records staff and 10 Secretaries some of whom were interviewed while others filled questionnaires. Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis approaches were applied. The study established that, the university lacked a clear records management policy, consequently; development and implementation of a records management programme and policies to establish formal records management programme with clear policies, infrastructure, staffing, guidelines and clear qualifications for records personnel is recommended.
Staff Attitudes as an Indicator of Change Readiness: A Case of a Higher Education Institution Adopting ICT in Students’ Record Management (Published)
This paper is a product of research that sought to evaluate the attitudes portrayed by staff in higher education administration in an effort to adopt ICT for students’ record keeping. With an endeavour to bring an understanding of change management in the context of an institution of higher learning, knowledge of the level of staff readiness for the change is important. Staff attitudes were evaluated in this paper because they are considered an important indicator of change readiness. The change under focus is adoption of a Student Information System (SIS) at an Institution of higher learning, Africa International University (AIU) and the results could relate to other institutions. The study involved university staff members who were in either management of course registration, grades information or both for the academic year 2011/2012. Mixed methods were used involving qualitative data, collected through pre-study interviews and quantitative data in the actual study. Data were collected in three phases, first was by face-to-face semi-structured interviews in a preliminary study with 2 members of the University’s Management Committee, and second was pre-study with 6 representatives of local best practices in records management (USIU and Strathmore University). Descriptive data for the actual study with AIU staff members were collected using a questionnaire which mainly collected quantitative data but also had room for open-ended questions. Evaluative Research design was adopted for the study, where descriptive data from AIU staff were placed in comparison with the pre-set criteria from the best practice institutions. Judgment was then made to determine the level of change readiness among the staff members at AIU based on prevailing attitudes to adopt a SIS in management of students’ academic records. The threshold for readiness was set at 67%. The entire study evaluated 5 indicators of change readiness, and only one, (staff attitudes) which is the focus of this paper met the set threshold to indicate change readiness towards the use of a SIS in records management.
