Multiple Roles And Burden of Working Mother in Informal Sector (Case Study: Mother as a Seller the Area of North Sumatera University (Usu), Indonesia (Published)
This research is based on gender issues that are increasingly widespread in so many aspects that it has implications for behavior change in women. One that looks striking is the removal of the limits of space for women who are no longer just taking care of the house and can be free to work outside the home. This condition has an impact on increasing the work force of women in the formal and non formal sectors. But in this study will focus on the informal sector in order to examine the double roles and the double burden of working mother accurately. When compared to working mothers in the formal sector who have better salaries and education then they can pay for Home Assistant services to lighten their dual roles and burdens at home. While mothers working in the non-formal sector with lower salaries and education should feel their own dual roles and burdens. Researchers interested with the phenomenon of working mothers in the University of North Sumatra as a street vendor (PKL) which often involved clashing with officials from Satpol PP and the Department of Transportation. Although there are often clashes caused by the curbing by the related parties, the street vendors keep selling by risking their own security and wares. Not infrequently the mothers of street vendors get unfavorable treatment and have to lose money because of confiscated merchandise. But this does not change the decision of the mothers of street vendors to keep working in the sector. The main factor is the limited skills and also the limitations of the economy. This research uses qualitative approach and descriptive method by conducting interview and direct observation to informant.
Reflecting on the Debates and Action of Mixed Methods Adoption in Business Research: Why Postgraduate Researchers Should Start Thinking This Way (Published)
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the philosophical arguments underpinning the choice of mixed method [MM] research design. However, the study concluded that mixing research methods in business research is important as it helps to strengthen findings and recommendations arising from a given research study. More so, we recommend for postgraduate researchers to rationalise their choice of mixing methods based on complementarities, research priority, purpose and the implementation of findings and not on the basis of philosophical ontology and epistemology. This has been found to be the reason underpinning the much-lauded arguments in the adoption of mix methods
Analysing Qualitative Data Using Facial Expressions in an Educational Scenario (Published)
In communication, both verbal and non-verbal means ensure that a message is conveyed, and facial expressions are acknowledged as one of the most influential factors in non-verbal communication. Facial Analysis Coding System (FACS) is a tool to analyse data other than the spoken language to improve a researcher’s reading of an interviewee’s emotions, and proposes a methodology to support the annotation process of facial expressions in a piece of communication. This study investigates an applied framework for FACS in an educational scenario. The study combines both the computerised and manual entries in the applied method. The study addresses the challenges, findings and recommendations of this applied method.
Perception and Experiences of Infection Control Practices among Professional Nurses in Secondary Health Facilities in South-South Nigeria: A Qualitative Approach (Published)
Infection control practice is a fundamental operational guiding principle in the delivery of modern health care. However, there is minimal qualitative investigation into professional nurses’ perception of infection control practices and how the experiences affect compliance with recommended infection control procedures. The purpose of this study was to examine and describe professional nurses’ impressions and experiences about infection control practices. A descriptive qualitative research design was used as the research framework. In-depth Interviews (IDI) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were completed with a sample of 54 nurses. The findings highlight the importance of both individual and organisational factors in determining Nurses’ compliance with recommended workplace safety practices. Four major themes emerged from the data, namely knowledge, infection surveillance, safety practices, and workplace policy. The findings indicate individual and organisational factors associated with compliance which are useful in developing strategies to facilitate long-term compliance with infection control practices among nurses.

ENHANCING QUALITATIVE EDUCATION THROUGH ICT AS A CATALYST FOR THE ATTAINMENT OF THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (Published)
The quest for the third world nations to become one of the 20 economic power nations of the world by the year 2020 sparked the need to institutionalize and enhance qualitative education at all levels of their education system. The 8 point MDG goals of the United Nation (UN) can only be attained in a nation that has quality education base that is affordable and accessible to her citizenry without any exception. In the present jet age, qualitative education is enhanced through information communication technologies (ICTs). ICTs are central to the creation of diversified and functional quality education system; creation of emerging global knowledge based economy and play an important role in promoting sustainable development aimed at achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This paper attempts to explore the importance of qualitative education through ICT in attaining the MDGs target of the UN in the areas of overall empowerment of` the populace to become self-sufficient and self-reliance, reduce poverty and hunger, gender equality and women empowerment, health and environmental stability. The factors that hinder quality education were also looked into. The paper also made recommendation on the way forward to enhancing quality education and the attainment of MDGs and concluded that unless a qualitative and functional education system built around the state of the arts in ICTs is institutionalized the quest to attain the MDGs and become one of the economic powers of the world by the year 2020 will definitely be a mirage.
The use of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) by foreign language (FL) learners has been described as steps taken by learners to enrich their word growth which would eventually enable them to function effectively in English. Research has shown fruitful outcomes of VLS, supporting the significant role it has in effective vocabulary learning, but whether VLS prevents English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ attrition of vocabulary knowledge has been under-researched. To help close this research gap, the current study attempted to shed more light on the role of VLS in memorisation of vocabulary, both word attrition and retention, of 41 Arabic learners of English before and after completion of a B.A. course. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to indicate patterns of VLS use. Vocabulary achievement tests were used to examine the attrition of receptive and productive knowledge of learned words. The results showed that the use of rote learning (repeating an English item with its Arabic translation) led to more attrition in receptive word knowledge, while note taking strategies (writing an English item with its synonym and definition) emerged as a positive predictor of learners’ retention in receptive and productive word knowledge. The findings have significant implications for adoption and teaching effective VLS that prevent or minimize vocabulary attrition by L2 learners.
