Women in Higher Education Institutions in Ghana: Discourse on Colonial Legacies and Cultural Norms (Published)
This study addresses the fundamental question of the under representation of women in higher education institutions in Ghana. The paper employed the qualitative research method to interrogate and understand beyond the statistics how the legacies of Colonialism have impacted the lives of female academics. Using a post-colonial theoretical lens, this paper explores the experiences of senior female academics by analyzing their perspectives on under-representation of females within public universities in Ghana. The study elicited information from 9 senior female academics within three Ghanaian public universities. A multiple case study design was adopted to provide a wider set of contexts in which to explore the research questions. The discussion in this paper produced knowledge that being a senior female academic was a struggle that has several gendered dimensions bequeathed through traditional Ghanaian practices as well as colonial vestiges that ensured the academy is male dominated. From the data discussed, this study argues that issues of postcolonial gender inequalities and the interface of cultural norms created gender tensions for women within higher education institutions and the wider society.
The Construction Of Women In Representations of Palestine in Ghassan Kanafani’s Umm Saad (Published)
This essay will argue that the multiplicity of identities is the main feature in the construction of representations of women in Palestine. Moreover; this essay will explore a range of different identities and positions that Palestinian women take on. In order to demonstrate this aim, the paper will contrast and compare the representations of Palestinian women both before and after the Intifada as represented by the male writer Ghassan Kanafani and the female writer Suad Amiry. And will analyse the multiplicity of female identities in the works of Kanafani and Amiry. Two specific texts by Kanafani and Amiry were chosen in order to give a more profound analysis – Umm Saad which represents a Palestinian woman before the Intifada‘ with ’a nationalism that draws as a political movement which challenges the colonial state’’ and Sharon and My Mother-in-Law: Ramallah Diaries that symbolises the Palestinian woman after the Intifada with different kind of nationalism that draws on‘’ a cultural construct which enables the colonial to posit their differences and autonomy’’. The choice of these texts is explained by the fact that they provide the most vivid representations of both the colonial and anti-colonial mentalities of Palestinian women. These texts are also chosen because they clearly reveal a distinction between ‘under occupation literature’ and ‘exile literature”.
FAILURE OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COLONIZED AND COLONIZER: A POSTCOLONIAL ANALYSIS OF FORSTER’S A PASSAGE TO INDIA (Published)
This study aims at describing the difficulties that colonized have to face in developing the relationship through Forster’s A Passage to India under the shadow of postcolonial theory. The colonial occupation of India is very vital in the background of the novel. The novel is focusing on the relationship established between the people of the two lands the British colonies and the Indians in Chandra pore highlighting the differences of thinking in making relationship with other which is the case of the failure in making relationship with each other. The writer is trying to make friendly relationship between Indians and British but we see throughout the novel that how every character in the novel is facing difficulties in developing relationship with one another.
