TOWARDS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPT “MAN AND HIS ENVIRONMENT” THROUGH AN “INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENT” APPROACH (Published)

“Man and His Environment,” is a topical issue in all discussions on the environment, which itself has been recognized as an important issue in sustainable development. A companion paper to this one on the title “Religion, Man and His Environment” (Fatubarin and Alokan, 2013), discussed the interactions of man with the natural environment. However, in order to have a near comprehensive account of the concept of man in his environment, all the environments, natural, socio-economic, political/governmental, built and spiritual, are considered as components of an integrated environment, in this paper. The paper discuses the diverse environments, their interactions among themselves and the adverse interactions of man in the environments. The paper concludes by noting that the issue of “Man and His Environment,” is too all-embracing, to be given either a physical or socio-economic interpretation alone. It has to be approached comprehensively, as done in this paper, to have a deeper understanding of the concept.

INVESTIGATION INTO THE INFLUENCES OF THE ISSUES OF GOVERNANCE FAILURE, CORRUPTION AND VIOLENCE, ON THE CHALLENGES OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF NIGERIA (Review Completed - Accepted)

As a follow-up to an earlier paper on the natural environment of Nigeria, in which a large number of challenges are highlighted for this natural environment, this investigation is conducted, to find out the extent to which issues of governance failure, corruption and violence, are implicated in these challenges. The investigation reveals that the three important issues are implicated in the challenges to a great extent. A large number of other issues are also implicated, to a relatively smaller extent. Prominent among these issues are those of ineffective laws, poor implementation of the laws, ignorance among the people, lack of environmental education and appropriate environmental ethics. Other issues that are also implicated include the culture of impunity among the people, inadequate political will by people in government, inadequate monitoring and surveillance of this natural environment. The paper recommends an aggressive mission to reform governance in Nigeria and the need to curb corruption and violence, which are also taking their toll on the natural environment of the country

INVESTIGATION INTO THE USE OF APPROPRIATE VALUES OF LIFE, IN TACKLING THE CHALLENGES OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF NIGERIA (Published)

As part of the on-going effort to attract attention to the natural environment of Nigeria, which over the years has been much degraded, an investigation is carried out into the use of appropriate values of life, in tackling the challenges of this environment. OUR ENVIRONMENT, THEIR ENVIRONMENTS AND THE SUSTAINABILITY OF OUR ENVIRONMENT (Review Completed - Accepted)

Environmentalists concentrate their efforts in seeing to it that sustainability is assured in the natural environment. The paper attempts to bring into the consciousness of environmentalist that a number of other environments exist that are in constant interactions with the natural environment and whose sustainability must also be assured in the overall interest of the sustainability of the natural environment. These other environments, are the man-made environments of socio-economic built and political/governmental environments. There is also the spiritual environment which humankind evolved with as a spiritual being.

Humankind must be in good standing in this spiritual environment to access the appropriate values that will enable them to assure sustainability in the natural and man-made environments. It is such values that will enable them to eschew all activities that border on corruption and violence, which are the bane of our environments.

This paper underscores the special importance of the natural environment, which is discussed as our environment – the environment of special interest to the environmentalists. It also highlights the importance of the man-made environments as their environments and the ways the activities in these man-made environments affect the natural environment. The paper discusses the efforts of human beings in managing the natural environment. It also highlights the challenges humankind is facing in this area. The paper is concluded with an admonition that humankind should endeavour to access the time-honoured values, without which no humankind can attain outstanding success, talk less of making community or nation attain sustainability of whatever type

CAN MOST THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES EVER GUARANTEE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE ENVIRONMENT (Review Completed - Accepted)

Five main types of environments are recognized. These are the natural environment, the socio-economic environment, the built environment, the political/governmental environment and the spiritual environment, which is an addition by the author to the list of environments. However, since these environments are in most cases affected by certain environmental challenges that are common to all of them and these environments are inter-dependent, with the happenings in one affecting the others, an “integrated environment” approach is adopted in this paper in discussing the environments, which are simply referred to as “the environment”, in most part of this paper.

The global environmental issues that are germane to sustainability of environment in which most of the third world countries are still lagging behind, are discussed. These issues are weighed against the back drop of the diverse sociological challenges facing these third world countries, many of which are not showing any sign of abatement within a foreseeable future. All these have led the author to the conclusion that most of these countries may remain in the doldrums for long, on the all-important issue of sustainability of the environment
