Curriculum Evaluation: A Comparative Study of a 4-Year B.Ed. Regular and a 2-Year Diploma Sandwich Students’ Results in Music, Movement and Drama (Published)
Both the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Diploma students at the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana, use the same content as prescribed in the Academic Bulletin but both are admitted on two different entry requirements with different duration accordingly. Sections of society speculate about varied performances of both categories of students without any empirical evidence. The purpose of the study was to ascertain how well the students have been prepared in terms of content assimilation and their relative performance. Using a purposive sampling technique, both regular and sandwich Music, Movement and Drama Level 200 students of the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University from 2008 to 2012 were selected for the study. Test results of the respondents from 2008 to 2012 which served as the data were analysed, after ethical issues were resolved, using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that both regular and sandwich students performed creditably well within the range of the years under review. It was, however, established that there was a statistically significant difference between the achievement of the B.Ed. regular and Diploma sandwich students from 2008 to 2012 academic years. On the basis of the findings, it was recommended that the mode of delivery of the sandwich programme be reconsidered such that there will be a bridge of the gap between the regular and the sandwich programmes in terms of performance.
Preparing To Teach Music in the Primary School (Published)
Teaching is the primary duty of teachers. For effective teaching and learning of music in the primary school to take place, teachers are supposed to consider pre-teaching preparation. Some activities that should be considered and included in the preparation stage include the study of content of the syllabus, preparation of the lesson plan, and gathering and preparation of teaching and learning aids/materials. This paper considers pre-teaching preparation for effective teaching of music in the primary school.
Ethiopia’ in Selected Lyrics of Tilahun Gessesse and Tewodros Kassahun Songs: A Comparative Analysis (Published)
The purpose of this study was to make a critical discourse analysis on the theme ‘Ethiopia’. Lyrics of selected songs of two prominent artists (Tilahun Gessese and Tewodros Kassahun) were used as corpus for the study. Classical compare and contrast method was employed for analysis; point-by-point and text-by-text organizational schemes were used to compare texts. The results of the study revealed that both artists have shown a remarkably similar approach in their music philosophy. Both singers firmly voiced ‘Ethiopia’ as ‘mother land’ for its people. Both artists discoursed on historical and natural heritage of the country as well as the patriotism sacrificed to preserve these heritages. Finally, the study also disclosed that both singers advocate for unity and love of ‘mother land’ to assure its sovereignty.
Language, Music and Dance as Tools for Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development among the Igala People of Kogi State, Nigeria (Published)
The paper examines the Igala language, music and dance as veritable tools to provide credible platforms for proffering solutions to the problems of humanity. The main objective is to appraise the contributions of language, music and dance to poverty reduction through employment generation, carrier development and job opportunity. Content analysis was adopted which made use of secondary data as the only source of data generation. Findings revealed that the Igala people have very rich culture and traditions which are expressed in language, music and dance. Also, the Igala culture has the ability to communicate instructions to the audience without spoken words and the ability of the hearer to also understand inwardly. The study recommends among others that the art of communicating verbally in language music and dance should be harnessed for carrier development, job creation, employment opportunity in order to reduce poverty scourge in the society.
Ethnomusicological Enquiry into Contemporary Indigenously Inclined Ìjálá Music in Yoruba Land (Published)
Yoruba social music appeal to traditional audience who are accustomed to the conventional property embedded in it. The appeal facilitates an increasing number of traditionally inclined social music practitioners who are gradually directing their efforts towards the creation of new form of ensemble music. Ethnographic method of data collection used in the study revealed that Ìjálá genre is text-based with symbolic use of words and allusion varying from place to place. It is monophonic in concept and the subject is centered on praise and adoration. It is seen as a verbal tool in the context of Ìjálá performances. The finding reveals the functional process of oral genre from place to place within a family or otherwise. Information on the use of Ìjálá music for different occasions was significant to the study. It further reveals the healing process of the oral genre.
The Influence of Music on the Elizabethan Era (Published)
The main motive of this research is to mainly study and find the features of the Music in the Elizabethan era. The Elizabethan era marked the pinnacle of music in England. The Elizabethan music went through a complete transformation from sacred to secular music and the introduction of musical instruments along with the songs. Elizabeth 1 was not just fond of music, but she could play various instruments such as flute and virginal. The introduction of complex music and the influence of musical instruments along with vocals truly marked the beginning of the English music that people are fond even today. The whole century has been the witness to the constant experiment and development of music which would not have been possible without the constant encouragement of the Queen. This research made us aware of the era where the contemporary music or songs played by the actors in the Elizabethan theatre and how it started to evolve.
Music can be used in ESL classroom to create a learning environment. It can be used in teaching second language acquisition as an effective vehicle for the rich literary content that lyrics hold. Music can be applied as a powerful instrument to help second language learners to acquire vocabulary. Learners of second language always perceive vocabulary acquisition as boring task. As listening to music and singing songs are enjoyable to students, it can be used effectively to acquire vocabulary in second language. This paper reports a study to find out how music accelerates vocabulary acquisition as the learners stay relaxed and thus learning becomes more enjoyable. To conduct the study, the researcher formed two groups namely Music and Non Music group. Data were collected through class observation, test, questionnaires and interview. The finding shows that music group performed well in acquiring and remembering vocabulary than non-music group. They also enjoyed vocabulary learning activities based on listening songs.
As a pianist, Franz Liszt plays an important role in the European music history. He made some open innovations in harmony, tonality and other aspects, which brought essential changes in his late piano works. He brought some new concepts of style and harmony to the music, giving music creators more inspirations.
