Demographic Variable and Job Stress as Predictors of Depression among Primary School Teachers in Lagos State of Nigeria (Published)

Issues of increase rate of sick leave, mood swing, fatigue and decreased energy, Feelings of worthlessness and helplessness which could be responsible for discontent and poor morale, low teaching efficiency, poor relationships with pupils, parents and subordinate, premature retirement, more internal conflicts and dysfunctional workplace climate among primary school teachers which can also be link with their wellbeing attracted the attention of this study. This study adopted cross sectional research design and Questionnaires were used to gather data from the primary school teachers. Purposive sampling technique was used to select two hundred primary school teachers who participated in the study. Data collected was analyzed using version 20.0 of statistical package for social sciences. The findings of this study revealed that that there is no significant difference in the depression of female teachers compare to male teachers among primary school teachers in kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos state, Nigeria  (t(198)=-1.249, p>.05). it was also discovered that that out of the socio-demographic variable, only monthly income made significant independent contribution to depression among primary school teachers (b=-0.227; t = -2.780; p<0.05). The result also revealed that primary school teachers with high stress reported higher depression than their counterpart with low stress (t(198)=-12.41, p<.05). Further analysis revealed that job stress and working experience had no significant joint influence on depression (F(5,194)=2.975; p>0.05; R=0.171,  R2=0.029), and also showed that job stress made significant independent contribution to depression (b=0.162; t = 2.287; p<0.05) while working experience had no significant independent contribution to depression (b=-0.077; t = -1.091; p>0.05). The study concluded that there is significant influence of job stress and monthly income on depression among primary school teachers in kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos state, Nigeria and recommend that government, stakeholders and investors in the field of education should review the job roles of primary school teacher as this study discovered that many of their roles constituted stress and result to depression.

Classroom Teachers’ Perceptions of Workplace Relationship Practices in Rural Ghanaian Basic Schools (Published)

In spite of accrued benefits of workplace relationships for organisations, Ghanaian management literature seem oblivious of it in today’s knowledge society where human capital has been estimated as a crucial production factor. Consequently, the current study seeks to explore the construct of workplace relationship between classroom teachers and head teachers in a rural Ghanaian setting using 136 survey data randomly chosen from the Ekumfi Education District. A survey instrument with overall alpha of 0.9 was mainly used to test three hypotheses and one research question. Statistical findings practically reveal that 22 per cent of classroom teachers’ performances are explained by job stress and propensity to leave as a result of workplace relationship with head teachers in the Ekumfi District. In addition, gender was not a distinguishing factor in workplace relationship management amongst classroom teachers. The researcher concludes, in search of variables predicting teacher productivity, relationship management constitutes significant force in the equation. Hence, school administrators and other stakeholders interested in teachers’ morale should intensify their education and build head teachers skills in workplace relationships management. Above all, contribution of this paper to educational policy formulation and evaluation are pointed out.

Job Stress among School Administrators and Teachers in Nigerian Secondary Schools and Technical Colleges (Published)

The paper examines stress, job or vocational and workplace stress. It views stress as the responses the body makes while striving to maintain equilibrium and deal with the demands of life. It is a psycho-physiological process which results from the interaction of the individual with the environment and results in disturbances caused to the physiological, psychological and social systems. Job or occupational stress refers to the mental and physical condition which affects an individual’s productivity at the workplace, as well as his effectiveness, personal health and quality of work. Role ambiguity, poor relations with boss, work overload, thwarted ambition and job insecurity as workplace sources of stress have been identified. Where teachers and school heads are under stress, there will be poor teaching quality, low students’ satisfaction and low turnover on the overall performance. The paper holds that teachers’ lives are often gravely affected by stress which leads to physical ill-health such as headache, stomach upset, aches and pains. Severe and unchecked stress leads to severe ill conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and heart disease. In critical cases, stress can lead to death. The paper identifies wrong ways to deal with stress to include smoking, using pills or drugs to relax, too much drinking of alcohol and other intoxicating drinks, filling up every minute of the day with activities in order to avoid problems, oversleeping, and transferring one’s stressful condition on others. Appropriate strategies to deal with stress, especially for teachers and school heads include regular medical checkups, exercises like jogging, bicycling and muscle relaxation. In addition, proper time management, having a positive outlook on life and bothering less about things one has control over go a long way in assisting teachers and school heads to deal with stress.
