Policy innovations in the VET sector: The role of instructors in competency-based training in Ghanaian TVET institutions (Published)

Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions in Ghana aim at providing learners with the required knowledge, skills and attitudes to perform effectively in the rapidly changing scenes in the workplace. Upgrading all polytechnics institutions into technical universities and introducing Free Education policy for all trainees in TVET institutions are recent major transformation in the TVET system in Ghana. Among the features that are emphasized in this transition is the method of teaching and learning in an environment of competency-based training (CBT). The study therefore examines what form of teaching learning strategies undertaken by instructors in CBT in order to equip trainees with the requisite competencies to perform professional tasks in the world of work. The study reveals that the pedagogical skills of instructors in CBT have not changed from the traditional system and calls for comprehensive staff development programmes for CBT teachers to establish long-term changes in their mindsets, belief systems, values, intentions and theories to match their new roles and tasks.

Chemistry Entrepreneurship: A Panacea for Chemistry Graduates Unemployment-The Nigerian Experience (Published)

This study sought to examine chemistry entrepreneurship as a panacea for chemistry graduates unemployment in Nigeria. The recent economy recession world-wide and particularly in Nigeria has necessitated the need to make a paradigm shift from consuming economy to producing economy. For any nation to attain the status of producing economy, its citizens must have acquired entrepreneurial skills in all sectors of the economy. Entrepreneurship is the capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit. The notion to become an entrepreneur in Nigeria is fast gaining ground in the face of little or no government jobs. The labour market is gradually becoming more attractive to graduating students as they want to be self-employed and independent.In view of all these, there is the need to entrench entrepreneurship education into our school curricula at all levels of education, most especially the higher institutions. This being as it is, there is need for inclusion of chemistry entrepreneurship in the chemistry curriculum most especially for our higher education students.Chemistry entrepreneurship being offered as a course will equip the students with the knowledge and skills to convert innovations from researches in chemistry into marketable products for commercial gain. Many of the household materials being used on daily basis are the products of innovations from chemistry researches. Such household materials as soap, candle, cream, toothpaste, slippers, shoe polish, insecticides, herbicides among others are enough, if invested in, to make a chemistry graduate a wealth creator instead of a job seeker.In view of the above, the paper recommends that the Nigerian government should prioritise, generally the academic entrepreneurship and particularly chemistry entrepreneurship in all our higher institutions, as this will go a long way in arresting the spate of chemistry graduates unemployment and also strengthen the nose-diving economy in the country.

REFORMS AND INNOVATIONS IN TEACHER EDUCATION: FACILITATOR OF ACCESS, QUALITY AND EQUITY AS EMERGING ISSUES IN EDUCATION IN KENYA (Published)

Teacher Education Programme (TEP) is a critical component of education in the society. It determines the rate and level of development in any society. This is because the programme focuses on preparation and production of school teachers whose main role is to transform a society with relevant competencies for development. However, due to the dynamic nature of education and society, Teacher Education Programme experiences emerging issues in education. Today in Kenya, and indeed in the whole world, the concerns in education are access to education, quality in education and equity in education. These are current aspirations by all in education but somehow elusive to realise. However, when proper reforms and innovations in Teacher Education Programme are undertaken, it is possible to develop and manage these important developments in education. This paper explores and discusses how reforms and innovations in Teacher Education Programme in Kenya can facilitate the achievement of access, quality and equity in education.

MODELING THE INDICES OF ORGANIZATIONAL AND MARKETING INNOVATIONS ADOPTED BY SMALL SCALE FLOUR AGRO- MARKETING FIRMS ABIA STATE, NIGERIA (Published)

A detailed analysis of the indices of organizational and marketing innovations has been examined in this study. The specific objectives duly analyzed were identification of the features of small scale flour marketing firms; analysis of the profitability and efficiency of the firms using income statement; ascertaining the determinants and indices of organizational, marketing and technological innovations. The technique of data collection was firstly a purposive sampling method to choose Aba and Umuahia Metropolis and small scale flour marketing firms and; secondly a random sampling selection technique was employed in selecting fifty specific firms for the study. The data elicited from sampling of fifty small scale flour marketing firms were analysed via descriptive statistics, income statement, probit and Ordinary Least Square Multiple regression analyses. The report from the results analyses showed that the significant indices of marketing innovation were price strategy, promotion strategy, distribution method, sales method, packaging and production strategies. On the other hand, significant indices of organizational innovation included work arrangement, quality management, motivation, use of promotion, product modification and employee schedule. The organizational innovation was highly significant than marketing innovation of small scale flour marketing firms in contributing towards enhancing the performance of small scale flour marketing firms. Thus, the organizational and marketing innovation indices analyzed in this work remained very significant and highly important tools for profitable marketing activity and in unlocking the marketing potentials of the firms and in encouraging competitive advantage over other firms that were indifferent about the strength of these organizational and marketing innovations. The study indicated that any small scale flour marketing firm that adopted for proper marketing and organizational innovations adapted successfully to emerging marketing challenges. Thus, it is recommended that small scale flour marketing firms should properly engage in organizational innovation involving work arrangement and effective employee work schedule which will contributing efficiently to better firm performance. Further, it is recommended that small scale flour marketing firms should include in their innovation portfolios price strategy, promotion strategy, distribution method, sales method, packaging, motivation, work arrangement, and product modification respectively which have the potentials to sustain the performance of the firms extensively.

EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGICAL CAPABILITIES, INNOVATIONS AND CLUSTERING ON THE PERFORMANCE OF FIRMS IN THE NIGERIAN FURNITURE INDUSTRY (Published)

The paper evaluates the effects of Technological Capabilities, Innovations and clustering on the performance of firms in furniture making industry in Southwestern Nigeria. The aim is to recommend policy measures to enhance the innovative performance of the furniture makers. The research covered Lagos, Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti States because of the predominant of the industry in these selected locations. The sample population consisted of 319 furniture makers. The research instruments were questionnaire and personal observation approaches. The questionnaire was administered to furniture makers and elicited information on the effects of Technological Capabilities, Innovations and Clustering on the performance of firms in furniture industry in Southwestern Nigeria. Personal observation was used to obtain more information on the industry. Both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were employed for data analysis. The result shows positive impact of technological capabilities, innovations, and clustering on the performance of the firms on new furniture products produced monthly through adaptation or modification on office furniture, cabinet, upholstery, beds, doors among others. Furniture makers benefit immensely from clustering notably in the area of sharing furniture experience from one another. The ideas of adaptation of furniture were obtained from brain storming of the master furniture makers with their colleagues and apprentices, while catalogue, photograph, magazine and their creativity were instrumental to minor modification of furniture products. Interaction between institutions and Furniture Makers needs to be strengthened to avail them of access to technical support services which institutions can render to the industry. So also financial institutions should finance the industry without interest rate.
