PLANT BIODIVERSITY OF NIGERIA AND OUR RELIGIONS AND CULTURES IN A CHANGING WORLD (Published)

The plants constitute a major component of the planet earth, which all living things need to sustain their life. The early man being limited in all forms of endowments of humankind, made very little use of these plants. He therefore maintained a stable equilibrium with them. The modern man (Homo sapiens), with his endowments, has asserted himself over other living and non- living things and is making use of the plants in diverse ways. These diverse ways, are in addition to a number of other benefits other living things including human beings, derive from the plants. This paper dwells on the services to which humankind has put the plants in the diverse religions and culture of people in Nigeria. The paper besides reviewing the diverse roles of plants in diverse religions and cultures, also discusses the changes that are now being experienced in the interactions of humankind with the plants. Nigeria is part of the African region, where biodiversity is claimed to be concentrated. It therefore behoves the people of Nigeria, to conserve the plants, so that their sustainability, can be assured.

UNDERSTANDING THE SPIRITUAL ENVIRONMENT AND ACCESSING IT FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN LIFE (Published)

The spiritual environment is presented as a factor that must be taken into reckoning, in attaining outstanding success in life. This is so not only for individual humankind, but also for communities and nations. It is the environment through which the spiritual being of humankind, interacts with other spiritual beings, such as the Supreme Being, His angels and satan and his cohorts. It is the environment in which the wicked among humankind, lay ambush for their victims, to carry out their evil deeds, which may adversely affect the destiny of such individuals, that of communities and nations. Accessing the spiritual environment properly, involves deployment of appropriate values and activities which are described as religious activities. It is through these humankind can also interact positively with the Supreme Being, who can frustrate the powers of the evil spirits operating in the spiritual environment

THE ENVIRONMENT, BIODIVERSITY AND THE BIBLICAL IMPERATIVE OF BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION (Review Completed - Accepted)

The paper represents a synthesis of the scientific and biblical perspectives on the all-important issues of the environment, biodiversity and the necessity of biodiversity conservation. It provides information on why the environment is important to life. It underscores the special importance of biodiversity to humankind. It reviews the various ways biodiversity is being threatened in the planet earth. It provides information on how biodiversity can be effectively managed by humankind at not only the local levels but also at the international level. Besides presenting the scientific view point on all these issues, the paper buttresses the presentation, with the biblical perspective. This is done not only to underscore the importance of effective management of our plant and animal biodiversity, but to let humankind appreciate the fact that the Supreme being who created the planet earth and all that are in it, has it in mind that all our plant and animal biodiversity must be conserved to assure their sustainability on the planet earth.
