Influence social media on the implementation of public relations in selected higher learning institutions in northern Tanzania (Published)
The paper assessed the influence of social media on the implementation of public relations. Research approaches were quantitative and qualitative research (explanatory correlation and case study designs). Simple random sampling, purposive and stratified sampling procedures were used to select University staff and students The target population was higher learning institutions in Northern Tanzania. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Data was anlaysed through frequencies, percentages, means and narratives. The study had two hypotheses which were tested using independent t-test analysis. Both null hypotheses were rejected and alternative hypotheses were stated. The findings showed that majority of respondents agreed that social media is a significant tool in influencing public relations programmes towards improving stakeholders relations in higher learning institutions. The study recommended that public relations managers and communication officers in the organization should increase and improve utilization of social media for the success of their communication strategies in the institution.
Facebook has globally become a great news purveyor and one of the fastest-growing social media in recent times. Since its advent, Facebook users get gratified diversely as they interactively comment and participate in the virtual social network. Newspapers predominantly post social updates and incisive news reports on Facebook. The study examined the reactions of urban youths in selected cities in South Eastern Nigeria to selected women and children news reportage in two online newspapers in Nigeria: Punch Newspaper and The Sun Nigeria. Online content analysis and a survey of 249 purposively selected respondents were part of the methodology. The study explores the magnitude of cyberhate and whether there are gender-dependent differences in users’ attitude towards cyberhate. The study also centres on the users’ reactions to cyberhate comments on the stories in selected newspapers; and the factors propelling cyberhate on women and children on Facebook. Findings show that cyberhate incidences tilt toward ethnic relations, and there were some significant differences between male and female respondents as to what constitutes cyberhate in Nigeria. The study recommends that Nigerian media organizations and journalists should mobilize and empower the public through citizenship education to shun and confront hate speech and use of foul language online as part of their social responsibility.
The Effect of Marketing Deception on Consumer Buying Decision on Facebook. An Empirical Study on University Students in Libya (Published)
This paper investigates the effect of marketing deception on the consumer behavior. Specifically, it investigates deceptive practices related to the product, price, place and promotion on the consumer purchase process. Since Facebook has become an important social media platform that is widely used in marketing in Libya, this study explores consumer perception of deceptive practices on that social networking site. The data was collected through an online questionnaire that was posted on several groups on Facebook in Libya. The researchers were able to collect 418 complete questionnaires. The findings indicated the marketing deceptive practices has a negative impact on consumer buying purchasing process. This article contributes to the academic knowledge by highlighting the damaging effects of marketing deception on consumer behavior. Moreover, it contributes to practice by providing some guidelines to companies to follow when using Facebook in marketing in Libya. By getting away from marketing deceptive practices, companies will be able to yield the best outcomes from marketing on Facebook. The study is limited by the sample size and the sample nature which consisted of Libyan students. Future research can focus on different social networking sites and different age groups.
Users’ Perception on the Use of Facebook as A Medium of Learning English as A Second Language with Specific Reference to Writing Skills (Published)
This is a descriptive survey that sampled the opinion of 60 regular users of facebook among students of a Federal government College in Lagos, Nigeria. The purpose was to determine the effect of facebook on learners of English; the official language of Federal Republic of Nigeria. Facebook as a social media provides a template for learners to discuss, interact, write, speak and exchange messages. The study focused the possible effect of staying long on facebook and the students’ consequent writing interest and fluency. Facebook messages (120 in all) were downloaded and analysed on the basis of language features. The students’ sheets totaling sixty — written in an examination condition were considered. These sheets were content-analysed to determine to what extent “social speak” as observed in their Facebook messages also occurred in the students’ answer sheets.The findings show that there is a gross influence of the emerging social media media language on students writing skills. Recommendations were made on how to control students’ exposure to siciual media and the damaging effects such may have on their language learning.
Social and Electronic Media as Correlates of Observational Learning among Junior Secondary School Students in Rivers State (Published)
The study investigated social and electronic media as correlates of observational learning among junior public secondary school students in Rivers State. Four research questions with corresponding null hypotheses guided the study. A correlational research design was used. The population of the study comprised all the 97,570 junior secondary school students in the 282 public secondary schools in the 23 L.G.As in Rivers State. The sample size was 2948 students. A simple random sampling technique using 20% of the 23 L.G.As gave 5 L.G.As 55 schools. The 55 schools have 7,374 students. The 40% of 7,374 students gave the sample size of 2,948 students. Four self designed instruments titled Whatsapp Use Scale (WUS), Facebook Use Scale (FUS), Television Use Scale (TUS), Radio Station Use Scale (RSUS) and Observational Learning Scale (OLS) were used for data collection. The instrument has two parts. Part A consists of the demographic factors while part B contains non cognitive and non standardized 50 items. WUS, FUS, TUS, RSUS and OLS have 10 items each. Face and content validities were ensured. The Cronbach alpha was used to establish internal consistency reliability of 0.89 for WUS, 0.81 for TUS, 0.78 for RSUS and 0.92 for OLS respectively. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to answer the research questions while the hypotheses were subjected to critical probability level of 0.05 alpha level. It was recommended among others that students should make adequate use of facebook applications to model after worthwhile behaviours and activities posted on the platform instead of for frivolities, Conferences should be held for the teachers/students by IT specialists on how to make effective use of whatsapp application through the download of educational events in order to achieve learning objectives
With the diffusion of social network sites and applications, social media have become one of the most popular Internet (communication) services. Most of the information exchange that occurs on these social networking sites is not only personal information or entertainment, but also new ways to stimulate citizen engagement in politics because of the fast flowing of videos and news reports. They are incorporating more political issues and public affairs into these social media platforms. The ‘Umbrella Movement’, which triggered global attention, is a typical case that illustrates the importance of social media in the social movement. During the entire 2014 campaign, social media and social media platforms played a key role in providing students a new way to obtain immediate information from different perspectives and allowing some student leaders to announce strategies or directions to other students or participants in the movement. In an era when students’ time and attention are increasingly directed towards social media and social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, these platforms allow students to obtain political information without needing the intermediate role of mass media. Reactions, feedback and conversations generated online are stimulating and facilitate social participation.
Students’ Perception of the Use of Social Networking Web-Based Tools for Instructional Delivery among Undergraduate Students (Published)
This paper examined the use of social networking web-based tools for instructional delivery among undergraduate students. Consequently, two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The survey study consisted of 200 students drawn from the Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Calabar Centre. A well validated 10 item questionnaire on a four- point likert scale was the instrument used for data collection. Data collected was analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation coefficient analysis at .05 level of significance. The results show that the use of web-based tools (e-mail, face book) greatly improved the quality of educational interaction and delivery among undergraduate students of NOUN. The paper, therefore, advocates that undergraduate students should be sufficiently exposed to and flexibly utilized these web-based tools to improve the quality of their academic work.

The study was conducted to find out the impact of social media on University of Cape Coast Psychology students’ academic performance. Descriptive survey and convenient sampling were the research design and sampling technique used respectively. The sample size of the study was two hundred (200) psychology students of the university of Cape Coast. Three research questions were posed to guide the study. Research findings showed that a greater number of psychology students in the university had access to the internet.To this end the researcher recommended that social networking sites should be created for educational purposes. This is to create a balance between social networking and academic activities of students to avoid setbacks in the academic performance of students.
