Examination of the Extent to Which English Aural – Oral Skills are Evaluated in Compliance with the Provision of the 9 – Year English Studies Curriculum at Junior Secondary Schools in Katsina State, Nigeria. (Published)

The study examines compliance with the 9 – year English studies curriculum proposition that after each topic students’ performance in oral English be evaluated. The design adopted for the study was the descriptive survey. Two objectives and their corresponding research questions were used to guide the research. 210 teachers of English and 384 students from public, community and private secondary schools across the seven zones of Education formed the respondents for the research questionnaires. Two sets of questionnaires developed by the researcher, were used for data collection. Forty eight teachers were also observed in real class teaching – learning situation. The findings as check – mated by classroom observation revealed neglect of evaluation of the aural – oral skills contrary to the provision of the 9 – year English Studies Curriculum. Where the tests were carried out. They were lop – sided in favour of productive skills. Among the recommendations given based on the findings is that In consonance with the 9 – year Basic Education English Studies Curriculum, after each lesson and each topic, schools management, inspectors and supervisors, should ensure that students’ oral performance is adequately evaluated.

An Examination of Cohesion as a Discourse Stylistics Strategy in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Flora Nwapa’s Efuru (Published)

While much of the critiques on Achebe and Nwapa’s works over years have concentrated on their content and meaning.  Thus, the present one is concerned with their form how they have applied elements of cohesion to arrive at their divergent meanings and opinions. The paper examines cohesion as a stylistics strategy employed in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Flora Nwapa’s Efuru. Stylistics is the study of the linguistic features of a literary text such phonological, lexical, syntactical features which directly affects the meaning of an utterance or a text and the study of style is aims at identifying linguistic variations which include cohesive devices. The aim of the paper is to identify and describe how Achebe and Nwapa uses cohesive devices to foreground the meaning in the novels under study. This is qualitative research, and since it is a study of cohesion as a stylistic feature, the paper adopts a descriptive approach. The paper adopts Halliday and Hasan’s model of cohesion within Systemic Functional Grammar which which sees cohesion as Semantic relations as a theoretical framework;. The study concludes that cohesion is an indispensable linguistic device necessary in making a text convey the intended meaning to its readers.

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (PUTME) As Predictors of Undergraduate Students’ Final Grades (Published)

This study set out to investigate UTME and PUTME Examinations as predictors of undergraduate students’ final grades. The research design is the ex-post-facto. The population of this study comprises of 100 and 200level undergraduate students in four different departments. The sample for the analysis is 436 students. Data were collected from the official students’ records at the Management Information System (M.I.S) Unit of the University of Benin.  The data collected were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) and linear regression.  The findings of the study revealed that JAMB/UTME, PUTME scores do not significantly predict undergraduate final grades in Nigeria University and both JAMB/UTME and PUME scores combined do not significantly predict undergraduate final grades in Nigeria University.  The need for stakeholders in education to examine the relevance of the JAMB/UTME and PUTME examinations in the selection of students into the tertiary institution which has led to multiplicity of examination and other attendant problems for the students, parents and even the institutions; and the need for every tertiary institution to be allowed to conduct their screening examination and not a stooge of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board were recommended.

The Impact of Private Secondary Schools on Examination Malpractices in Nigeria (Published)

This paper examines the impact of private secondary school on examination malpractices in Nigeria. It also explain the impact of the school management, teachers, parents, government agents and students on examination malpractices in Nigeria. However, it also discussed the causes and effects of Examination Malpractices on the academic achievement of the private secondary schools students. Yet, it emphasis the factors that influence the students on examination malpractice in private secondary schools. Similarly, it states the outcomes of examination malpractices on the academic performance of the secondary schools students in Nigeria. Thus, the implications of examination malpractice on the student’s academic achievement were thoroughly discussed.

Examination of the Application of Health and Safety Plan on Construction Sites in Lagos State, Nigeria (Published)

The construction industry is an important part of the economy in many countries and is often seen as a driver of economic growth especially in developing countries. Owing to its relatively labour intensive nature, construction works provide opportunities for employment for a wide range of people skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled. Despite its importance, construction sites are considered risky with frequent and high accident rates and ill-health problems to workers. However, knowledge on health and safety management and related factors on construction sites in Lagos State is not well documented. This study was therefore undertaken to examine the current practice of application of Health and Safety Plan during project implementation. In pursuing this objective, a descriptive case study research design was used where 32 construction project sites in Lagos State were selected through random sampling. A total of one hundred and twenty eight (128) copies of questionnaire were administered to participants with years of experience on construction management in Lagos State, Nigeria. Data obtained based on snowball and random sampling technique were analysed through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 21 using Mean Scores and Relative Importance Index (RII). The significance of each of the associated variables as impacted on construction workers health and safety practices on buildings project were determined using Independent Samples Test, Mann-Whitney U Test. Descriptive outcome of the statistical analyses showed a high prevalence need of safety practices. The findings of the study established dissatisfaction with effective use of health and safety plan and its implementation among site operatives because workers find it difficult to adapt to as it was against their traditional practices(RII=0.776), unethical practice of workers due to human attitudinal peculiarities (RII=0.766),inadequate engagement of safety managers on sites (RII=0.764), inadequate engagement of safety managers and ineffective supervision on site(RII=0.762) as well as poor communication between site managers and site operatives (RII=0.756) as factors preventing effective use of health and safety plan among the categories of respondents sampled. The study concluded based on Mann-Whitney U Test result on health and safety improvement measures and control systems available for health and safety practices and workers performance on construction sites. The study recommends use of a more proactive and integrated management mechanism to enforce the existing Safety and Health regulations in construction sites, in order to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health on the site.

Psycho-Social Factors and Examination Malpractice Tendencies among Pupils in Ikom Education Zone of Cross River State, Nigeria (Published)

This study examines psycho-social factors and examination malpractice tendencies among pupils in Ikom education zone of Cross River State. It inquires how these factors influence pupils’ malpractice tendencies. 520 pupils were randomly sampled for the study, 2 research questions and 2 hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Pupils’ Psycho-Social Factors and Examination Malpractice Tendencies Questionnaire (PPFEMT) was used to gather data for the study. Data was analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that pupils’ attitude to school and pupils’ test anxiety do not significantly influence pupils’ examination malpractice tendencies. It was therefore, recommended that, head teachers should organize educational programmes on examination stress management to assist pupils cope with test anxiety etc.

Investigating the Effects of Bangladesh and Global Studies (BGS) Assessment of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Examination on Students Learning (Published)

The study determines to find out the present situation of Bangladesh and Global Studies test items/creative questions in Bangladesh. This descriptive study was conducted using a concurrent triangulation research design. To conduct this study both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. 16 test of Bangladesh and Global Studies test items/creative question papers of 2015 or 2016 were selected purposively as a sample from all educational boards. Bangladesh and Global Studies curriculum were analyzed to find out the major skills reflected through the curriculum. 48 students were selected conveniently for an interview from those who had been passed the SSC examination of 2015 or 2016. For collecting data from these sources, test analysis protocol, the curriculum content reading protocol and interview protocol were used as research tools. Test analysis protocol consisted of two criteria; wording criteria and practising criteria. Selected test items were analyzed based on these two criteria and Bloom’s cognitive domain. The study revealed that there was an imbalance in wording criteria and practising criteria of test items. SSC examination test items didn’t reflect the major skills of the curriculum appropriately. Most of the test items promoted students lower level learning and ignored higher level learning.

Examination of JSS II Students’ Readability of Prose Passages in Oyo State (Published)

This work examined the readability of prose passages for Junior Secondary School II students reading to learn prose in order to ascertain the suitability of the text to the learners proficiency level. Eight (8) secondary schools were selected in Oyo State. Four (4) representing those in rural areas while the remaining four (4) represented the schools in urban areas. From each of the schools, fifty (50) subjects were randomly selected; totaling four hundred (400) subjects. Three research questions were formulated and cloze test was used as the main instrument for data collection. The findings revealed that the text recommended for the students is not suitable enough because majority of them read at frustration level. It was recommended that stakeholders should always select appropriate reading materials taking into consideration the cultural neutrality of the text and the standardized contemporary language; publishers and writers should use standardized readability formulas to grade texts and teachers should teach reading in line with other communication skills in order to assist the students in acquiring a wide range of vocabulary needed for reading a text.

Parenting Styles as Correlates of Students’ Attitude towards Examination Malpractices in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State: Implications for Counselling (Published)

Parenting styles refers to practices adopted by parents in rearing their children. A good parenting style is needed to develop in a child interpersonal relationship, capacity to take initiatives, self-reliance, motivation and to conform to societal acceptable code of conduct. Bad parenting style is counterproductive and may as well get children involved in antisocial behaviours including examination malpractices. This work is a correlational study intended to determine the relationship between parenting styles and students’ attitude towards examination malpractices. Three research questions and three hypotheses were designed to guide the study. The instruments for data collection were Students’ Attitude to Examination Malpractices Scale and Parenting Style Scale. These instruments were vetted by three experts in Educational Psychology. The reliability coefficient of Attitude to Examination Malpractices Scale measured through test-retest method and Pearson product moment correlation technique was 0.86. The reliability indices of sections of Parenting Style Scale established through Cronbach Alpha technique were 0.68, 0.81, 0.73 and 0.84 for sections A, B, C and D respectively. It was found that though, majority of the students showed negative attitude towards examination malpractices, a sizeable percentage of them showed positive attitude towards the malaise. Authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful parenting styles had a significant joint relationship with students’ attitude towards examination malpractices. Authoritative, authoritarian and permissive parenting styles each had individual negative relationship with students’ attitude towards examination malpractices while neglectful parenting style had a positive relationship with students’ attitude towards examination malpractices. Based on these findings, it is imperative for the counsellors to assist prospective couples through premarital counselling or marital counselling to adopt good parenting styles especially authoritative parenting style in nurturing their children. Appreciable number of counsellors should be employed by the government of Rivers State and sent to secondary schools to help maladjusted students acquire good value re-orientation that will enable them distinguish what is good from what is bad with a view to avoiding negative tendencies including examination malpractices

Examination of The Readability Level Of Some Approved Science Textbooks in Use in Junior Secondary Schools in Ebonyi State Of Nigeria (Published)

This study was designed to examine the readability level of some approved Science textbooks in use in Junior Secondary Schools in Ebonyi State of Nigeria. The sample of the study consisted of three (3) approved Science textbooks, 21 Junior Secondary Schools randomly selected from the 3 Education zones of the State. The instrument used for data collection is Science Textbook Readability Text (CSTRT). The data were interpreted using a standard guideline for calculation and readability level by Harrison (1980). The results of the findings showed that the approved Science textbooks were very readable. Based on the findings, conclusion were drawn and it was recommended that Science textbooks should be revised periodically to enrich the readability of the textbooks
