Ecofeminist Colourings in the Works of Chinua Achebe and Thomas Hardy (Published)
The current global environmental crises urged me to investigate the manner in which writers from different backgrounds represent man’s relationship with nature in their texts and how they tie it to feminist dynamics. More precisely, the work focuses on the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe’s trilogy Things Fall Apart, No Longer at Ease and Arrow of God and the English writer Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. The research question that guides the work is: how do Chinua Achebe and Thomas Hardy represent the connection between environmental issues and gender considerations? The hypothesis is based on the premise that the two authors represent the environment and feminine realities with hints to the need for more protection. Second Wave Ecocriticism as outlined by Lawrence Buell and Ecofeminism according to Paul Sanders Quick constitute the theoretical framework while the Comparative Approach of Tötösy de Zepetnek that stresses on an international dimension is the methodology used to bring out the ecofeminist visions of the two writers in the above-mentioned texts.
Investigating the Effects of Urbanization on Environmental Degradation in Yenagoa Metropolis, Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria (Published)
The study investigated the effect of urbanization on environmental degradation in Yenagoa metropolis, Bayelsa State. The concentric zone model provided the theoretical framework for this study. The correlational study design served as the study design, while probability and non-probability sampling techniques were used for the sampling procedures. Using Taro Yamane formula, the study sampled a total of 339 respondents. Data for the study was gathered through structured questionnaires. Data collected for the study was subjected to statistical analysis using percentages, frequency distributions table, pie chart, mean, binary logistics regression and Pearson correlation with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Based on analysis, the study concluded that rapid urbanization led to housing problem, flooding and poor sanitary conditions. Based on the findings, the study recommended quality housing structure, environmental sanitation and effective urban planning by Yenagoa Capital City Development Authority to prevent degradation of the environment.
Photocatalytic Activity of Mn-N Co-Doped Zns Nanoparticles for Degradation of Organic Pollutant (Methylene Blue) (Published)
Nanoparticles of undoped ZnS, Mn-doped-ZnS,N-doped-ZnS and Mn-N co-doped ZnS were prepared by using chemical co-precipitation method. The precursors used to synthesize the photocatalyst nanoparticles were:Zn(CH3COO)2.2H2O, Mn(CH3COO)2.4H2O and Na2S.9H2O. The characterization of nanoparticles was done using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and UV–VIS Spectrophotometric technique.The average crystalline size of as-sythesized photocatalysts calculated using the Debye- Scherrer formula was 7.80, 7.48, 6.61 and 6.59 nmfor Zc, NZ, MZ, and MNZ respectively. The percentage degradation of methylene blue under UV irradiation at 180 minutes were: 10.12, 24.85, 45.19, 38.09, and 55.60 for uncalcined zinc sulfide (Znc), calcined zinc sulfide (Zc), Mn-doped zinc sulfide (MZ),N-doped zinc sulfide( NZ) and Mn-N co-doped zinc sulfide (MNZ) respectively. Under solar irradiation the Percentage photodegradation of MB were: 13.53, 30.17, 49.00, 57.30 and 70.75 for Znc, Zc, MZ, NZ, and MNZ respectively.The pseudo first order rate constant (k) of MB photodegradation for Znc, Zc, NZ, MZ, and MNZ were 5.72 × 10-4, 1.64× 10-3, 2.54× 10-3, 3.23× 10-3 and 4.48 × 10-3 min-1 and 0.8×10-3, 2.15×10-3, 4.16×10-3, 5.3×10-3 and 8.66×10-3 min-1 under UV irradiation and under solar irradiation, respectively.
Environmental Planning and Management (EPM) As a Strategry for Solving Environmental Problems in Niger Delta Region: A Study of Bonny Island, Rivers State, Nigeria. (Published)
Environmental issues are meant to be operationalized through the formulation of actor-specific environmental actions plans, which define priority action that will convert strategy into practice. The Environmental Planning and Management (EPM) process which is an increasingly popularized strategy of solving the myriads of problems affecting the environment in contemporary world. The study examines the use of Environmental Planning and Management (EPM) process as a strategy of solving environmental problems in Bonny Island, Rivers State, Nigeria by investigating the perception of the general public on the state of the environment in the area, level of participation of people in compliance to existing environmental strategies, causes of ineffective environmental management in the area and assessing community satisfaction with existing environmental management approach using well structured questionnaires administered to sampled households. Questions were related to socio-economic characteristics of households, willingness to participate by the community in the EPM process, perceived level of environmental degradation in the area, level of compliance of oil and gas companies to environmental laws and the role of Government environment protection agencies in protecting the environment of the study area. The results confirm that the level of damage from oil exploration, gas activities, pollution and pipeline vandalizations is chronic and cumulative, which has resulted to the degradation of the environment, routine of facilities and compliancy to environmental management approaches are not regular, facilities and equipment were found be grossly inadequate therefore proper inspection can not be well carried out, the community expressed dissatisfaction with the existing environment approach which they attributed to the inability of fully implementing the environmental approach, the community indicated that given the opportunity they are willing to participate in evolving an effective environmental management approach. Recommendations were made for the effective and efficient application of the EPM process in the study area.
