Locus of Control and Marital Status as Predictor of Counsellors’ Job Satisfaction in Delta and Edo States (Published)
This study investigated locus of control and marital status as predictor of counsellors’ job satisfaction in Delta and Edo States. The study was guided by nine research questions and nine hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The research design was predictive correlational survey. The population of the study is 359 practising guidance counsellors in all public secondary schools in Edo and Delta states. Delta state has 217 counsellors and Edo state 142 counsellors. The sample of the study was being made up of all practising counsellors in public secondary schools in Secondary schools in Edo and Delta States. Since the population of 359 is small and manageable, the entire population was studied. Two instruments were used to collect data for this study. These are Locus of Control (LOC) and Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (JSQ). The research adopted the three instruments for the study. The researcher and other research assistances administered the instruments through direct delivery method. The researcher with the help of 11 well-trained research assistants, distributed the questionnaire to the respondents and collected completed copies from them. Out of the 359 copies of the questionnaires distributed only 343 (95.5 %) copies were retrieved from the respondents. For data analyses, research question 1-9 was answered using a simple regression analysis. The null hypothesis were tested using simple and multiple analyses. Findings from the study revealed that, self-efficacy is a significant predictor of job satisfaction of secondary school counsellors in Delta and Edo States. It was recommended that since marital status and locus of control are jointly predictors of job satisfaction among secondary school counsellors. Hence, earnest efforts should be made by governments and counselling psychologists to enhance locus of control of counsellors for the purpose of transforming education in Nigeria. Counsellors with internal locus of control are more likely to create and promote conditions and interpersonal networks that nourish and sustain work satisfaction.
Teachers’ perception of the roles of guidance counsellors in secondary schools in rivers state (Published)
The study investigated teachers’ perception of the roles of Guidance Counsellors in secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select three hundred and seventy (370) male and female secondary school teachers from a population of five thousand three hundred school teachers. The “School Teachers’ Perception of Guidance Counsellors Rating Scale” (STPRGCRS) was administered to the respondents to collect necessary data. The t-test statistics was used to test three null hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. The findings revealed that there were no significant differences in teachers’ perception of the role of Guidance counsellors in secondary school in Rivers State. Therefore, the three null hypotheses were accepted. Based on the above findings six (6) recommendation were made: (1)The Government of Rivers State should endearvour to establish counselling units in each secondary schools, and should be functional to meet the needs of students. (2) Qualified counsellors from accredited colleges and universities, with minimum qualification of bachelor in Guidance and counselling or psychology. (3) Counsellors should focus on counselling students as their primary functions. (4) Counsellors should hold staffing with parents, students and teachers as time will permit in each school session. (5) Counsellors should strictly observe confidentiality as code of ethics. (6) Counsellor should be able to refer students with major emotional problems to the appropriate helping professionals.
Performance Assessment of Secondary School Counsellors in Counselling: Anambra And Enugu States of Nigeria in Focus (Published)
The study sought to determine the performance assessment of counsellors in counselling as a school guidance service in Nigerian secondary schools. One research question and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the descriptive survey study. The population of the study was 47010 respondents out of which multistage sampling technique was used to select a sample of 739 respondents, being 45 supervisors and 675 SS II students. A 4 point researcher made 7 items questionnaire tagged Performance Assessment of School Counsellors in Counselling (PASCIC), with a reliability index of 0.73, Cronbach alpha was used to elicit responses after which 720 copies were duly filled and returned. Mean and t-test at 0.05 level of significance were used to test the research question and the hypothesis respectively. Findings reveal that Nigerian counsellors, in the face or all odds are proficient in counselling which would be traceable to cultures and traditions of counselling by elderly people in Nigeria to the younger ones.
PSYCHOSOCIAL OCCUPATIONAL STRESSORS AS CORRELATE OF JOB SATISFACTION AMONG STUDENT COUNSELLORS IN NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA IMPLICATIONS FOR INTERVENTION (Published)
This study determined whether there were significant relationships between the selected psychosocial occupational stressors of career advancement, workloads, interpersonal work relationship, gender difference in family/work interface, and control/decision latitude and job satisfaction among student counsellors practicing in National Open University of Nigeria. This study adopted descriptive survey of Ex-post facto design. The research population included all the sixty-two student counsellors serving in NOUN as at July, 2013. Purposive sampling technique was used. Out of the sixty two Psychosocial Occupational Stress Scale (POSS) distributed, only forty- four were properly filled and used for analysis. The reliability of the instrument was established using test-retest correlation via Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) which yielded average of r=.77. The alpha level of significant was set at 0 .005.The analyses via SPSS indicated that there were positive low relationships between Job satisfaction and career advancement (r= 0.011; p =0.942), interpersonal relationship (r=. 0.175; p =0.255) and workloads (r=0.102; p =0.511).While there were inverse low relationships between job satisfaction and gender difference in family/work interface (r=.0.-.229; p=0.135 and, control and decision latitude (r=0.-217; p=0.157). All the null hypotheses were accepted, inferring that, there were no significant correlations between psychosocial occupational stressors and job satisfaction of student counsellors in NOUN. These results were therefore attributed to student counsellors’ expert knowledge and skills in the management of stress. Based on the findings, incisive recommendations were also made
