Influence of Social Stigma and Fear of Self-Disclosure on Students’ Perception of Counselling in Secondary Schools in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria (Published)

Fear of self-disclosure and social stigma are social factors that may possibly influence perception about counselling, acceptance of counselling and willingness to access counselling. This study therefore investigated the influence of fear of self-disclosure and social stigma on students’ perception of counselling among secondary school students in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State. It is a correlational study involving a sample of 798 SS2 and SS3 students drawn from a population of 2529 SS2 and SS3 students in public secondary schools in Emohua Local Government of Rivers State. The sampling techniques employed are a combination of simple random sampling and proportionate stratified random sampling techniques. The instrument for data collection is Social Stigma, Fear of Self-Disclosure and Students’ Counselling Perception Questionnaire which was vetted by specialists in Counselling Psychology. Its reliability coefficients obtained through Cronbach alpha technique ranged from 0.71 to 0.86. The results of the study revealed that fear of self-disclosure has a negative and significant influence on counselling perception among secondary school students in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State. Social stigma also has a negative and significant influence on counselling perception among the students. It was therefore recommended that counsellors should uphold the tenets of their profession about confidentiality in handling matters concerning the clients by ensuring that personal information provided by counsellees is not divulge to other people. Students should cease seeing colleagues who seek for counselling as degenerate and irresponsible, but should encourage one another to access counselling when the need arises.

Plato’s Philosophy of Education and Its Implications to Counselling (Published)

The focus of this work is on the implication of Plato’s philosophy of education on counselling. It unveiled that Plato’s philosophy of education hinges on education for all boys and girls to the limits of their ability and in the same analysis, people should be educated according to their various talents and abilities. This has implication for trait and factor theory in counselling which surmises that decisions about vocations are not adequate if one does not understand himself as much as the characteristics of the vocation which an individual want to pursue. At the end, recommendations were made which includes, for the avoidance of wastages, talents should be engaged where they fit in and that the curriculum should be flexible.

Assessment of Guidance Services in Senior High Schools in Upper Denkyira East Municipality (Published)

The purpose of the study was to assess guidance services rendered in the Senior High Schools(SHS) in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality. To accomplish this, descriptive survey research design procedure with a quantitative approach was adopted. The study employed a multistage sampling procedure where sample size of 474 respondents were used. There were 133 staff (teachers, counsellors and headmasters) and 341 SHS students. Questionnaires were used to obtain data from the respondents. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages, means and standard deviations) and inferential statistics (independent t-test and MANOVA). The study revealed that generally both students and staff have positive views about the nature of guidance services provided in Senior High Schools within Upper Denkyira East Municipality. Again, it was confirmed that most staff and students agreed that guidance resources and materials are unavailable or inadequate in the schools for effective implementation of guidance services. The findings prove that there was statistically significant difference between the staff and students in their perception towards the nature of guidance services provided. It was therefore recommended that the Ghana Education Service implement fully its policy of assigning guidance and counselling coordinators to each Senior High Schools to allow for constant and fulltime access of the students to guidance and counselling.

Integrating Counselling into Early Childhood Education in Nigeria: The Benefits, Challenges and Implications for Practice (Published)

This paper focused on the role of the professional counsellllors in early childhood education. It is observed that little or no attention has been given to this level of education in Nigerian school system until recently, particularly with the enactment of the 2013 NPE. The involvement of professional counsellors at this cadre of education could help young learners to achieve more guided educational successes as they navigate the other levels of education. In pursuit  of this goal, this paper further examine  some challenges and benefits of early childhood education which could be ameliorated and facilitated respectively by guidance and counselling. The paper argued that appropriate counselling interventions at an early stage of young learners could contribute to their successful education as well as maximize their future well being. In this regard, the paper put forward multilateral counselling interventions at five levels. They include counsellor’s collaboration with school proprietor, counsellor’s partnership with preschool teachers, counsellor’s interface with parents, counsellor’s interface with young learners and Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON) consultation with government. It is therefore, recommended that guidance and counselling should be an integral component of early child education in Nigeria as a means of enhancing the attainment of its educational objectives.

Needed Educational and Professional Re-Orientation of School Principals for More Effective Counselling Services in Nigeria (Published)

The purpose of this paper was to examine the needed educational and professional re-orientation of school principals for more support towards effective counselling services in Nigerian schools. In this endeavour, principal’s positive disposition has been conceived as a tool for successful realization of guidance programmes in schools. This paper also noted that inspite of the acknowledged or well known significance of school principals towards effective counselling services in schools, their disposition is however, not quite supportive. The paper therefore, recommends the re-orientation of school principals towards providing more support for counsellors job. Towards this goal, it examined various educational and professional ways and means of re-orientating school principals. The re-orientation of school principals would enable or facilitate more positive principal’s support for counsellors in schools. It s hoped that the points made in this paper would bring into sharper focus of educational policy makers and school operators, the desirability of re-orienting school principals for more effective counselling services in school. This could be done through (i) leadership training and re-orientation that emphasizes guidance services (ii) increasing the content of counselling course units in principal’s in-service education (iii) counselling association of Nigeria routine interface with school counsellors and principals amongst others.

Career counselling needs for women in rivers state (Published)

The study examined career counselling needs for women in Rivers State, Nigeria. The survey method was used. A simple random sampling technique was used to select three hundred (300) female undergraduate students from a population of nine hundred. The instrument used for this study was the “Students Self Rating Career Counselling Needs Scale’ SSRCCNS) for data collection. The t-test statistics was used to test the two null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the two null hypotheses were accepted: There is no significant difference in career counselling needs between part-time female undergraduate students who are having academic problems, and those having clear standing. Also, it was revealed that there was no significant difference in career counselling needs between female part-time undergraduate students who are employed and those unemployed. Based on the findings some recommendations were made: (1) Universities in Rivers State should open service career counselling centre to assist students with their career counselling needs. (2) Career counsellors should pay attention to dual career women. (3) Career counsellors should assist students to express their fears about gender role stereotyping in the given culture.

Students from Different Cultural Backgrounds, Their Difficulties upon Elementary School Entry in Greece and Teachers’ Intercultural Educational Practices (Published)

The present research aims to explore intercultural practices that are adopted by primary school teachers so as to address the difficulties faced by students from multicultural backgrounds upon their school entry. Moreover, it aims to explore teachers’ perceptions regarding the counselling dimension of their role. For that purpose, a questionnaire was used including open and close type questions. The sample was composed of 106 teachers from Primary Schools of Achaia in South West Greece (86 women and 20 men, 25-55 years old). The results indicate that intercultural activities adopted by teachers as long as their pedagogical suggestions are mainly stereotypical. They also refer to an early conception of intercultural pedagogy based more on acceptance than in coexistence / inclusion. Moreover, teachers do not seek further counselling to address students’ difficulties, although they acknowledge the major problems faced by students coming from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Counselling Implications of Conflict and Conflict Resolution in Secondary Schools in Ebonyi State (Published)

The study investigated the counselling implications of conflict and conflict resolution in secondary schools in Ebonyi State.  Specifically the study assessed the extent to which school principals adopt dialogue, arbitration, third party and sanction in conflict resolution in their schools. The population for this study consisted of all the principals of public Secondary Schools numbering one hundred and fourty-seven (147), and the entire population was used. Four research questions and one null hypothesis guided the study.  The instrument for data collection was a four point modified likert-type questionnaire – conflict resolution assessment scale (CRAS), while the data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation for the research questions and t-test for the hypothesis. The findings showed that while sanction was used to a great extent, dialogue, arbitration and third party were used to a low extent.  Again, gender of principals does not significantly influence the type of conflict resolution method used.  The counselling implications of the findings were outlined including: the fact that people have problems which should not be taken for granted or sub-summed in their conflict.  Recommendations were also made for example that Government officials who relate with the school authority should also be involved in dialogue, arbitration and third party methods of conflict resolution instead of just using sanction as the only option.

Amenability of Psychologically Traumatised Nigerian Youths to Counselling (Published)

The study investigated the level of trauma experienced by Nigeria children and adolescents.  It also examined the challenges being faced by the teaming population of youths that have been traumatized.  The study identified the various traumatic situations prevailing in Nigeria.  Also, it examined the availability and responsiveness of these youths to available Counselling and adequacy of Counselling.  The traumatic experience of youths seems to be accountable for most of the insurgency, terrorism and restiveness pervading entire Nigeria.  This is because there are occurrences such as kidnapping examination malpractices child trafficking bomb explosion, political offences, economic fraud, religious crisis, ritual killings, abduction drunkenness, armed robbery and so on.  All these seem to have defiled all weapons of sanitation in Nigeria. Descriptive research design of the survey type was used for the study after consulting the entire Nigeria population.  Based on the above discovery Nigeria government should consult the genealogy of harmful traumatic occurrences affecting the youths in Nigeria to be able to nip it in the bud.  Curriculum planners should identify incorporate trauma provoking situations into the school curriculum to be taught.  Counsellors and care givers should be trained on how to reduce and counsel traumatized youths.  Trauma centres to provide hospice services should be established by State and Federal Government. The study could be of benefit to school children parents teachers examination bodies counsellors, curriculum planners, religious leaders, school administrators and law enforcement agents.   They would learn, teach, counsel and ameliorate traumatic and trauma provoking situations.

The Influence of Counselling, Training and Consultancy on Venture Start-Ups by Women and Youth in Baringo County, Kenya (Published)

Enterprise development interventions are critical to the development of an entrepreneurship society. The support interventions are critical to new venture starts-ups among the vulnerable members of society. This paper examines the influence of counselling, training and consultancy enterprise development interventions facilitate new venture start-ups among women and youth. The paper is based on a study of new venture start-ups among women and youth in Baringo County. The study adopted a survey design. The target population of the study was 1049 respondents from which a sample of 281 was randomly selected. Questionnaire and data sheet were used as the data collection instruments. The collected data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study showed that most of the entrepreneurs in Baringo County are influenced by group members to engage in new business ventures. Other motivators include personal imitative, family members and access to entrepreneurship training. Unfortunately, most of the youth and women entrepreneurs have never received any business management training in basic accounting, book keeping and entrepreneurship skills. This can be attributed to the fact that, as attested to by most of the respondents, most of the training available is not for free or subsidized. Therefore, most of these budding entrepreneurs may not afford to take part in training. Nevertheless, the entrepreneurs admitted that there they needed training to enhance their capacity to successfully run their enterprises. The regression model indicated that there is a significant relationship between consultancy, training and counselling and new venture start-ups (p=0.022). The study concluded that support is generally available and relatively easy for farmer-owned commodity processing businesses to obtain. The study recommended that the county government of Baringo should support entrepreneurs by creating a favourable business environment for their operations.

Guidance and Counselling: A Creativity for Promoting Sustainable Well Being and Adjustment of Secondary School Students in Nigeria. (Published)

The Nigerian education system adopted guidance and counselling as a school service programme meant to promote well being and optimal adjustment of learners. Its scope covers all aspects that enhance student’s excellent academic performances, preparation for and adaptations into vocations, and abilities meant for use in resolving personal, social and psychological problems. It emphasizes self direction and clear definition of purpose meant to actualize life skills for growth and development of learners in and out of school. Its importance in schools cannot therefore be over emphasized. It follows therefore that among other counselling techniques used in group dynamism, peer group counselling technique appears to among others, be good modalities for championing the means of creating the sustainable students’ well being and adjustment. Guidance and counselling should therefore be supported to cater accordingly for the stated purpose.

NEXUS OF CHANGE MANAGEMENT ON ORGANISATIONAL PERFORMANCE AND SURVIVAL IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES (A CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN) (Published)

Most business managers have seen change becoming a regular aspect of organizational life and they must constantly monitor and respond to these changes appropriately. The overriding goal is to optimize the output of the people involved in this process and reduce the risk of failure in achieving the desired change. Change management is usually seen from an organizational context and refers to the process of developing a planned approach to change in an organization. Business environment has become much more turbulent, uncertain and demanding change is inevitable in an organisation. Business operates in a dynamic environment and organisation that fails to recognise the inevitability of change is doomed to fail. This paper is designed to examine the nexus of change management on organisational performance and survival in Nigerian universities using University of Ilorin as a case study. Both primary and secondary sources of data constitute the main source of data gathering. Random sampling technique was used in selecting the sample size. Regression analysis was used to analyse the data obtained and the testing of one hypothesis formulated. The results obtained reveal a strong negative relationship between changes introduced through Computer Based Test in the University.This research recommends that before embarking on any change, the university should attempt to maintain useful customs and informal relationship, build trust, encourage participation, provide information in advance, make only necessary changes, guarantee against loss, provide counselling, allow for negotiation between the University Management and the staff and students.

PREVALENCE OF BABY FACTORY IN NIGERIA: AN EMERGENT FORM OF CHILD ABUSE, TRAFFICKING AND MOLESTATION OF WOMEN (Published)

Baby factory which serves as an avenue for human trafficking predisposes women of childbearing-age, expectant mothers and the child to ineffable trauma, violence and abuse. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine the recurrent nature of child abuse and trafficking and molestation of women in Nigeria occurring in those places the media has termed ‘baby factory’ with a view to providing preventative approaches for curbing the menace, using counselling as a tool. The study utilised a descriptive survey in which 800 respondents (teachers and principals) in secondary schools were randomly drawn from 3 south-east states. Data was collected using a 25-item questionnaire (0.85α) constructed on four-point likert-type scale. Result shows that the leading causes of baby factory in Nigeria include poverty, childlessness, lack of ethical behaviour on the part of medical professionals, and greed among others. It further shows that there is no significant difference in the mean responses of teachers and principals on the causes of prevalence of baby factory in Nigeria, F(1, 799) = 16.66, p = .75. Providing preventative counselling, developing positive self image in the youth, and providing family counselling for childless couples by encouraging them to go for proper adoption at the social welfare and to seek advanced medical care were found to be among the major roles guidance counsellors could play in curbing the prevalence of baby factory in Nigeria. The finding also shows that there is no significant difference in the mean responses of teachers and principals on the roles of guidance counsellors in curbing the prevalence of baby factory in Nigeria, F(1, 799) = 4.95, p = .55. The conclusion and recommendations in this article were based on these findings
