Contextual Analysis of the Political Contents of Nigerian National Newspapers Editorials in the 2011 and 2015 General Elections (Published)
The mass media clarifies issues; as was the case in the 2011 and 2015 elections. Whereas campaigns in the period were fraught with ideological justification, the electorates had to make choices. National newspapers editorial pronouncements needed to be established to ascertain their contributions to democratic enthronement. With the six geo-political zones of the nation, 5 national dailies: The Sun, The Punch, This Day, Leadership and Daily Trust were considered. The constructed and continuous week consideration resulted in 14 days, per daily/annum as sample size, using the code sheet with the content analysis research design. With reliability of 0.89 coefficient and employing simple percentages, it was found that the political contents of Nigerian national newspapers in year 2011 outnumbered those of year 2015 notwithstanding that general entries increased in 2015 than 2011.Topical editorials were advised.
Language is particularly significant in law because it is through it that law finds expression. From formulation to interpretation and enforcement, law exclusively depends on language. Legal contract is notorious for formalities and unchanging nature, especially with the use of archaic words and formulaic expressions is an important genre of legal English. Although the formalities afford lawyers opportunity to achieve “precision”, they constitute a serious challenge for the layman. This study examined the frequency, structure, and meaning of archaisms to argue that the elements are operational tools in legal contracts. The data for the study were derived from ten purposively sampled legal contracts (scanned and converted to electronic-version) of about 7116 words of the Akure Judicial Division of Ondo State Nigeria. With corpus linguistics methodologies, using register analysis within the purview of Systemic Functional Grammar, the study adopted the content analysis methodology to identify archaisms in the legal contracts, and to quantitatively and qualitatively analysis the data. The study found 20 archaisms of 4 categories occurring 187 times (2.6%) of the total number of words to justify the claim that archaisms, which are no more found in general English usage, are still very much in use in legal documents, especially contracts. This study concluded that archaisms which according to lawyers, are used to lend a touch of formality and precision to legal language, should give way to modern words which can serve both lawyers’ and non-lawyers’ needs.
Nigerian Newspapers Framing of the Chibok School Girls Abduction (A Study of the Guardian, Daily Sun, the Trust And Leadership Newspapers) (Published)
This study investigates how selected Nigerian newspapers reported the Chibok school girls’ abduction in Government Secondary School, Chibok Borno State on April 14 2014. The research focuses on how the abduction is framed in the news stories of two Southern and Northern Nigerian based newspapers (The Guardian, The Sun, The Trust and Leadership Newspapers) and how such frames influenced the audience. In conducting this study, two research methods- content analysis and survey methods, were used to generate quantitative data for analysis. Content analytical method was used to study seven news frames as used in the selected dailies while survey was used to establish the influence such frames have on the news audience. After a thorough analysis, it was found that the selected papers used rescue efforts frame, hopelessness frame, political frame, religious frame, ethnic frame, conspiracy frame and economic frame. It was equally found that hopelessness frame was used more in news report more than others. Finally, it was established that mass media audience believed that the way the abduction was framed in the media has made them to think less of any rescue put by the government.
AN EVALUATION OF ELEMENTARY LEVEL ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS OF PUNJAB GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS IN PAKISTAN (Published)
This article assessed the content material of three language textbooks used in public schools at elementary level, specifically grade VI, VII and VIII. The evaluated textbooks are used in public schools of the Punjab province in all the government education sectors in Pakistan. Furthermore, a checklist is specifically designed and applied on the textbooks. The core concern of the evaluation checklist is to analyze the overall impression of textbooks and content analysis along with the activities and organization of contents, topics and course work. The results lead to the conclusion, with the quality features and drawbacks which are considered to be the part of course books. It evolves the objectives, content material and process with approach. Results provide proper recommendation for the revised and alternative adoptable additional material.
To explore an apparent disparity among human capital information desired by financial analysts and fund managers and actual disclosure of such information in company annual reports in the context of Kurdistan. Current study used content analysis to assess the extent and nature of human capital information actually provided in the annual reports of 100 listed companies in Kurdistan. The results stated that, the human capital information provided in non-uniform, un-quantified and very limited. Many of whom be figureheads with little impact on the way companies are run and in creating value for the firm. Accordingly, analysts have to rely on alternative sources to get their desired information, which is a costly process for private shareholders. The current study contributes to the literature on the demand for, and disclosure of human capital information in the context of Kurdistan.
In the body of qualitative research literature, a number of attempts have demonstrated that technology could serve a useful role to enrich and deepen the process of data collection and analysis. The purpose of this study is threefold. First it attempts to explore possible learning experiences within dialogues among women from the platform of the virtual community (the blog). Second, it endeavors to uncover to what extent women could benefit from this virtual community. Finally, it provides an example and possible strategies for qualitative researchers to incorporate technology into their research. Three analytical strategies were utilized: word count, content analysis, and constant comparison analysis. Two major findings are discovered. First, in this virtual community, women are eager to “know others” and “hear others’ stories” (see figure 1 and table 1). The findings of constant comparison analysis further confirm the results from word count and content analysis. Second, it seems that for qualitative researchers, blogs or similar online formats could provide a rich and meaningful context data for the investigation.
