Quality Educators for Every Child: A Pilot Professional Development Intervention in Bangladesh (Published)

Over the past two decades, best practice teaching methods have been the subject of education reform around the world. Quality Educators for Every Child (QE4EC) was an exclusive intervention in Bangladesh aimed to deliver flexible professional development for primary school teachers, focusing on pedagogical skills in the classroom (how to teach) rather than subject skills (what to teach). The endline study focused primarily on the three National Teaching Standards (Pedagogical Knowledge, Classroom Management and Assessment) and sought to measure change and improvement against the benchmark of teacher competencies established during the baseline study. This study highlights the findings from the endline survey and presents background information on the quality of education and teaching in Bangladesh. Endline findings are organized according to the three national teaching standards of focus. Finally, presents recommendations for the teachers and head teachers of the primary schools, as well as policymakers and education administrators in Bangladesh.

How Should The Educatıon Of Thınkıng Be? “Thınkıng Wıth Multıdımensıonal Perspectıves” (Published)

The purpose of the education of thinking is to develop children’s ability to establish cause and effect relation and support their judging ability by making them think on concepts that are important for them. Thinking with different perspectives points out to the process which includes thinking about what lies behind the things in order to identify the meaning and purpose of a situation, researching the factors that affect the condition, analyzing, and thinking about what to do further. Thinking with different perspectives reveals a multidimensional thinking approach. For the development of thinking with multidimensional perspectives, it’s important to observe, compare, discover, deduce, communicate, interact, be motivated, be recognized socially, be independent, experience the nature, be supported by teacher/adults. The education of thinking with Multidimensional Perspectives can be carried out for people of any ages, from infants to adults. During the process of thinking with multidimensional perspectives, some topics such as self knowledge, knowledge of the others, being aware of a third person/object or a situation, group perspective, social and global perspective dimensions can be examined and situations/cases can be studied. In this study, five dimensions which are important for thinking with multidimensional perspectives are studied and information are presented with regards to Application Stages for Thinking with multidimensional perspectives.

CHILD ABUSE AND STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BOKI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE (Published)

Child abuse is an act of inflicting serious, physical injury and emotional torture on a child or person, which is intentional or unintentional and could endanger the physical, health, emotional, social, moral and educational wellness of the child. The contributing factor of child abuse can be identified as poverty and ignorance on the part of the parents or guardians and others. Observing the alarming endless cry of students and those hurt in the process and maltreatment, the researcher was therefore interested in investigating child abuse as it affect the academic performance of students in Boki LGA of Cross River State. To achieve this purpose two (2) null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A sample of 200 respondents were randomly selected for the study. The selection was done through simple random sampling technique. The questionnaire was the main instrument used for data collection. Test re-test reliability of the instrument was established, while Pearson product moment correlation analysis was the statistical technique considered appropriate. The critical level of .05 was used to test each hypothesis. The result of the analysis revealed that child physical abuse and sexual abuse were statistically related to students’ academic performance. Based on the findings recommendations were made on the need to affectionate and intensified campaigns for awareness creation on the menace of child abuse – physical and sexual abuse as they deaden the future of the child, family and society.

MANAGING SEXUAL ABUSE OF STUDENTS BY TEACHERS. A CASE STUDY OF MASVINGO DISTRICT SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ZIMBABWE (Published)

Child sexual abuse is becoming devastatingly prominent in most schools, it is wide spread but largely unrecognized problem in many countries. Schools should be a safe haven for students. Under the hand of a respected teacher students are damaged leading to immense suffering of victims and creation of a bad reputation for the teaching profession. It hinders the development of abused individuals. This paper explores sexual abuse of students by teachers in schools. The study adopted a case study design using questionnaires and semi structured interview schedule to collect data. Generally the teachers and school heads were of the opinion that teachers sexually abuse students in the school contexts. Various reasons were given why teachers commit such a criminal offence. Some of the reasons were said to be reflected in the community and wider society such as unequal power relations, and beliefs in myths such as having sex with a virgin cures HIV and AIDS. The study also found a host of negative repercussions on the victims. The participants established that sexual abuse was detrimental to the physical, social and cognitive development of the child and they suggested ways schools can implement to prevent sexual abuse of students by teachers.
