The qualitative research ventured on revealing the reasons of using gay lingo in the academic community and analyzing its unique linguistic features. In identifying the linguistic features of gay lingo, the researcher analyzed the data taken from the informants from their simulation and list of gay words. These data were treated using morpho-semantic analysis: the Morphological Analysis revealed patterns of structural formations in gay words; the Semantic Analysis revealed the semantic processes on the meanings of gay words.The study employed the phenomenological design conducted in 3 College institutions in Tagum City. The participants of the study were the college students particularly the homosexuals. The investigation involved 28 gay participants, whose backgrounds were based on the school they attend to.The results of the study revealed ideas that concretized the reason of using gay lingo in the informants’ respective schools. The following themes emerged during the interview: Learning Gay Lingo from Friends, Sex Talks, Making Gossips, Sexual Identity, and Sense of Security. On the analyses of linguistic features of gay lingo, it revealed the following: the Morphological Analysis revealed patterns of formation in gay words. These patterns of gay lingo are as follows; clipping with affixation, variety formation, straight words derivation, popular words derivation, gay word affixation, foreign sounding, and gay word expressions. In the Semantic Analysis, it revealed the semantic processes on the meanings of gay words. These processes in there semantic formation are as follows; corporal derivation, mutual comprehension, and variety synonymy.
An Investigation into Visual Language in Powerpoint Presentations in Applied Linguistics (Published)
PowerPoint Knowledge presentation as a digital genre has established itself as one of the main software by which the findings of theses are disseminated in the academic settings. Although the importance of PowerPoint presentations is typically realized in academic settings like lectures, conferences, and seminars, studied to probe the role of visual resources in presentations have received little attention. The current study aligns its march towards scrutinizing the anatomy of visual interaction in the PowerPoint defense session presentations prepared by Iranian Master of Arts students majoring in Applied Linguistics. The study aims at describing the identity of visual resources in the PowerPoint presentations by categorizing the utilized visuals within the presentations according to their communicative purposes. To this end, the study analyzes 70 PowerPoint defense session presentations given at various universities across Iran in Applied Linguistics. So as to do analysis, the study draws on the typology of visuals introduced by Rowley-Jolivet for classifying the types of visuals. The results of visual analyzing mirrors the fact PowerPoint defense session presentations in Applied Linguistics visualized themselves more by scriptural visuals to their members of discourse community. The findings, moreover, demand a framework of presentations in Applied Linguistics for more norm-compatible presentations.
POLICY EVALUATION OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND ITS IMPACT ON STUDENTS’ LEARNING PROFICIENCY (Published)
This paper aims to investigate the policy of assessing student achievement used in Saudi Arabia which called “continuous assessment/evaluation”, (i.e. it is the follow-up and testing the proficiency of the student’s skills) as placed by the department of Educational Supervision in Ministry of Education. Moreover, this research paper evaluate the process of students’ assessment and its effectiveness to overcome the obstacles and propose appropriate solutions of assessment methods that suit the Saudi students’ nature and environment. One main question arises here. It is “Is this programme commensurate with Saudi social and cultural society?” this question is divided into two sub-questions. They are “Does it fulfill the desired standard goals?” Then, “What are the advantages and disadvantages of the assessment used?” Therefore, it is necessary to assume and find answers to these questions. The method used is the historical and descriptive analytical method. The samples participated in this study include 40 teachers and supervisors work in the Dawadmi General Directorate of Education in Saudi Arabia. A 25-item questionnaire is distributed to the sample to sum out the participants’ point of views about the goals, advantages, and disadvantages of the assessment method used in Saudi Arabia. The most important result is that this programme needs modifications to suit the Saudi nature and environment. Moreover, finds out that this programme makes students dependent learners. Therefore, the study, mostly, recommends that it needs intensive efforts and experiments to study the Saudi situation in order to find suitable pedagogical methods of assessment that suit Saudi students’ nature; and administering intensive training programmes for both teachers and supervisors.
