Managing Labour Unionism for Industrial Harmony and Academic Excellence in University Education Programmes in Cross River State, Nigeria (Published)

Labour disputes have become regular occurrences in Nigeria and the right to trade unionism has been constantly abused. Such unionism abuses and disputes often results in low productivity, which in turn affects the demand and supply chain of the economy. The laws in the country are always not abided by, so rather than bargaining, unions embark on strike as first resort, thereby constantly disrupting industrial harmony and academic activities in Nigerian Universities. The objective of the study was to examine the influence of labour unionism on industrial harmony and academic excellence in university education programmes in Cross River State, Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The study population was the principal officers in the management and administrative cadre of the public Universities in Cross River State. Purposive sampling approach was used to select all the principal officers of the Universities because the population was manageable. A total 380instruments was administered for which 363 favourably responded. An instrument titled: Managing Labour Unionism for Industrial Harmony and Academic Excellence in University Education Programmes Questionnaire (MLUIHAEUEPQ) was used to elicit information from the respondents. Data collected were analyzed by means of simple linear regression. Finding revealed that labour negotiation and collective bargaining significantly influenced industrial harmony and academic excellence in university education programmes in terms of stable school calendar, staff productivity and effective communication among the employees. Based on the findings of this study it was therefore recommended that the management of labour unions in Nigerian Universities should be detached from the influence of the government and the university principal officers. Also, labour unions should be allowed to operate as a single entity representing and protecting the interest of their members devoid of unnecessary interference by the university management.

Task Based Grammar Instruction for Social and Academic Interaction (Published)

Learning English for Academic and Specific Purposes helps the English as Second Language learners to be communicative in academic social contexts. Focus on form is an important part of learning English for academic purposes. The ability to use appropriate vocabulary and structure in a meaningful context is what an English for Specific Purpose learner dreams about for academic excellence. Such an ability would undoubtedly motivate learners to learn and produce English for social and academic purposes. This could happen only when the learner develops his repertoire of grammar which is no less an outcome of the teaching and learning process. The present paper deliberates on how a language class focused on form could unassumingly involve the ESP learners think creatively in a task based role play activity as a main activity to negotiate meaning with their peers using the language syntaxes and lexis appropriate to the context.

Industrial harmony enhances labour productivity as one of the critical means of improving performance in the education sector, achieving economic growth, enhancing living standards and quality of life. It creates a peaceful working environment that is attractive to tolerance, dialogue and other alternative means of resolving industrial or labour disputes. It is in this vein that the paper discusses the imperative of industrial harmony for academic excellence and a productive educational system in Nigeria. To ensure harmonious industrial relations, the leader of every institution will need to encourage, open and frank discussion of the institution’s problems with the subordinates; seek the opinion of those doing the institutional job i.e. the staff; explain their discussion to those who have to carry them out; recognize the contributions of all involved in the institutional job; set collaborative goals to encourage team work instead of autocracy and listen to rather than talk at their subordinates. In conclusion, effective and understood grievance procedure that is simple, straightforward, flexible, proactive, responsive, devoid of protocol and time conscious is central to harmonious industrial relations. Above all, promoting visionary and disciplined leadership within our educational system is a key to a conductive environment for learning devoid of corrupt practices and indiscipline.
