Awareness and Use of Institutional Repository for Academic Staff output in Tertiary Institutions

Abstract

The paper is on Awareness and Use of Institutional Repository for Academic Staff output in Tertiary Institutions.  The use of IRs by academic staff is beneficial to the individual lecturer, library, host institution and society at large. The benefits of IR to individual lecturers include increased dissemination and impact of scholarship, enhanced professional visibility due to broader dissemination and increased use of publications. Others are: storage and access to a wide range of materials, greater security and long-term preservation of materials and the building of a central archive of a researcher’s work. Institutional repositories have been established in academic and research libraries. University based institutional repositories manage, disseminate, and preserve where appropriate, digital materials created by the institution and its community members. The paper discussed awareness, use and benefit of IRs, academic staff attitude towards intellectual work deposit in IRs and challenges of IRs in our academic community. Based on the literature in area of the problems that face academic libraries in Nigeria, the researchers made some recommendations
