Variations in Visfatin Levels in Hypertensive and Normotensive Menopausal Women in Benin City, Nigeria

Abstract

Visfatin is a hormone produced in visceral adipose tissues. It is a protein present in several mammals, and encoded by the NAMPT gene within humans. The aim of this study was to establish a possible relationship between visfatin and hypertension and to delineate a possible mechanism of action for visfatin and reactive oxygen species. The study was carried out in the department of physiology, university of Benin, Nigeria. 150 women were enrolled. Results show a significant increase in visfatin levels of perimenopausal normotensives than in perimenopausal hypertensives.
