RESOURCE CAPACITIES SUPPORTING THEMATIC APPROACH IN TEACHING ECDE CENTRES IN UASIN GISHU COUNTY (Published)
Teachers are important resources in the teaching and learning process and should therefore be considered alongside other learning resources. They are the best recourses to be built into a particular teaching strategy designed to achieve a specific learning practice for instance thematic approach, without which can be administrative problem to head-teachers. Without adequate resource materials, it is a drawback to the implementation of new ideas and techniques. The study sought to investigate resource capacities of ECDE centers in supporting thematic approach in teaching in early childhood development centers in Eldoret Municipality. It was guided by Kurt Lewin’s Three Stages of Change Model developed in 1954. The study adopted the Descriptive Survey research Design. The target population comprised 266 respondents comprising of 164 ECDE teachers, 82 head teachers and 20 Educational Officials. Stratified sampling was used to select thirty schools out of eighty two schools; Public and Private Schools which translated to 30% of the total sample population. Purposive sampling was used to select all the head teachers to participate in the study while random sampling was also used to select one ECDE teacher. Instrumentation included the questionnaire, interview guide and document analysis. Data was collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Majority of the ECDC’s have inadequate resources and capacities both physical and human required supporting the implementation of thematic approach in teaching ECD children. The head teachers who supervise the curriculum in their schools are also not ECDE compliant hence, may not have be in a position to advice the teachers concerning the approach appropriately. The study recommended that ECDCs be equipped with adequate and developmentally appropriate materials and resources.
Stochastic Frontier Production Function on the Resource Use Efficiency of Fadama II Crop Farmers in Adamawa State, Nigeria (Published)
This study assess the resource use efficiency of Fadama II beneficiary crop farmers in Adamawa state, Nigeria . Data were collected on a sample of 160 farmers and were analyzed using stochastic frontier production function. The maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) for the stochastic production function results shows that the coefficients of farm size, inorganic fertilizer, hired labour and expenses on ploughing, significantly affect food crop output of the respondents. The mean technical efficiency was 0.71 (or 71%), the mean allocative efficiency was 0.76 (or 76%) and the mean economic efficiency was 0.54 (or 54%). The study concludes that, the maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) for the stochastic production function of the coefficients of farm size(X1), inorganic fertilizer (X3), hired labour (X5) and expenses on ploughing (X6) were found to be positive and significantly affect food crop output of the respondents with the mean technical efficiency is 0.71 (or 71%). It is however recommended that, Government and other donor agencies should intensify advisory services activities on effective resource allocation, utilization and other ways of increasing farmers’ beneficiary income. Government in partnership with private sector should encourage farmers to increase its technical efficiency in food crop production which could be achieved through improved farmer specific efficiency factors, which include improved farmer education, access to credit, access to improved extension services and less crop diversification. Government to introduce mentorship and pre-job training programmes and to include the youth in policy decisions.
Effect of Timber Resource Processing on the Edibe-Edibe Creek in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria (Published)
This study examines the quality of water and the variation in the physical and chemical properties of water in the Edibe-edibe Creek. It also looked at the microbial characteristics of the Creek. The data for the study were derived from direct field observation, sampling measure in situ measure and laboratory analysis. The phypico-chemical parameters as well as the bacteriological parameters were analysed the laboratory using various instruments. The result of the analysis revealed that: except for electrical conductivity, PH and iron, all other parameters were on the increase from station one to two. However, nitrate had the same values in both, Station one and two. The biological analysis also revealed that the parameters had an increase value from station one to two. Generally, it was discovered that the water in this Creek is not good for domestic purposes because of the availability of nitrate and the acidic nature of the water.
